Ana Paula Lopes (born July 1959 in Lisbon, Portugal), is a Toronto-based social innovator, speaker and entrepreneur. [1]

Education and awards

Lopes holds a HonBA from the University of Toronto [2] and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) of Greater Toronto, Fundraising Volunteer of the Year in 2009 and was listed as one of WXN The 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada in December 2013. [3] In 2014 the President of Portugal awarded Lopes the Portuguese Order of Merit. [4] She was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2011. [1]

Career

Lopes has worked for over 25 years in senior positions in the public sector, as Legislative Assistant to Ontario Minister of Culture Rosario Marchese starting in 1990 and starting in 1993 as Executive Assistant to Ontario's 21st Premier Bob Rae. [5] She began her career in the 1980s in public policy for the Ontario Government in the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture [6] and the Policy and Planning Departments of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.

Lopes is a Director of the Tapscott Group – a privately held business strategy-consulting firm. [7]

As a corporate director in the not-for-profit sector, Lopes has led numerous transformations. She is the immediate Past Chair of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation (CAMHF) – Canada's largest mental health and addiction hospital. She is a Breakthrough Campaign Cabinet Member which is leading a $1 billion transformation of that institution. [8] She is the former chair of the board of directors of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, [9] and a former Director of many organizations including Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Foundation, Women's College Hospital Foundation, Trent University, Business for the Arts and a leader and mentor in the Portuguese-Canadian community. She is a Member of the Writers' Trust of Canada Board of Directors. [7]

Personal life

Lopes and her husband Don Tapscott endowed the Tapscott Chair in Schizophrenia at the University of Toronto. [1]

Lopes is married to Don Tapscott, author of numerous bestselling books such as The Digital Economy and Wikinomics. They have two married adult children. [10]

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is a psychiatric teaching hospital located in Toronto and ten community locations throughout the province of Ontario, Canada. It reports being the largest research facility in Canada for mental health and addictions. The hospital was formed in 1998 from the amalgamation of four separate institutions – the Queen Street Mental Health Centre, the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, the Addiction Research Foundation, and the Donwood Institute. It is Canada's largest mental health teaching hospital, and the only stand-alone psychiatric emergency department in Ontario. CAMH has 90 distinct clinical services across inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, and partial hospitalization models. CAMH has been the site of major advancements in psychiatric research, including the discovery of the Dopamine receptor D2.

Joseph Louis Rotman,, was a noted Canadian businessman and philanthropist. Rotman was the founder, benefactor and member of many successful organizations, such as the Clairvest Group Inc., the Rotman Research Institute, the Rotman School of Management, and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Throughout his life, he received three honorary degrees, as well as an induction into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He is well-regarded for donating his time and financial assistance to numerous philanthropic causes including the arts, education and healthcare.

Reva Appleby Gerstein was a Canadian psychologist, educator, and mental health advocate. She was the first woman Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario, serving from 1992 to 1996.

Linda Frum is a Canadian author and journalist, and was a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada from 2009 until 2021. She announced her retirement from the Senate effective August 27, 2021 to devote more time to other pursuits such as her role as chair of the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto.

David Goldbloom, OC, MD, FRCPC is a Canadian psychiatrist, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, author, lecturer and mental health advocate. He has worked as physician, researcher, policy advisor, journalist and broadcaster.
