Anai Ayya brothers were brothers were two brothers named Anai and Ayya who lived in the 18-19th century Tamil Nadu, and were composers of Carnatic music. Anai Iyer (1776-1850) and Ayyavaiyyar (1778-1857) used the mudra and composed mostly in Telugu and Tamil. Anai Ayya brothers were born in Vaiyacheri and spent all of their life in the village.
The Anai Ayya brothers were close contemporaries of the Trinity of Carnatic Music and especially had a closer and good rapport with the great composer Saint Tyagaraja. They were related to the legendary vocalist Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer and the versatile and blessed poet Ramaswamy Iyer (together called the Vaiyacheri Sivan Brothers). Ramaswamy Iyer and Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer's mother Arundhati (or Thayu) Amba belonged to the clan of Anai Ayya brothers. Also, the eminent percussionist considered to be the father of Thanjavur Bhaani of Mridangam playing Shri Thanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer is a paternal descendant of one of the composer brothers, Ayyavaiyyar.
Anai Ayya brothers regularly attended the famous Thiruvaiyaru Sapthasthaana Utsava and used to participate in the Namasamkirtana and Bhajan music processions along with Saint Tyagaraja and their disciples at Thiruvaiyaru. During one such Utsava procession when both Saint Tyagaraja's and Anai Ayya's troupe were singing together along the temple car streets of the Aiyarappar Temple, Anai Ayya brothers excelled in their Alapana of the Varali raga. Saint Tyagaraja who was listening to their Varali raga exposition was ecstatic and moved to tears of joy and is said to have exclaimed: "Varali is your treasure. You are made to sing Varali and it is my privilege to enjoy listening to it".
Together they wrote many kritis out of which only about 26 Tamil and 12 Telugu compositions are currently available. They have composed several kritis on the presiding deities of Vaiyacheri, Thiruvaiyaru, Chidambaram and Tiruvannamalai. Their compositions had the theme of devotion sprinkled with philosophy, Jñāna, Vairagya (Vairāgya (वैराग्य)) and bhakti. Their songs were in praise of Siva and his consort Amba. They were also patronised by the king Serfoji II of Thanjavur.
According to an oral tradition, the music of the Anai Ayya brothers attracted even the venomous cobras. They seemed to enjoy their music. The deadly reptiles could not be scared away even by the panicky human rasikas nor would they harm them in any way. They would quietly slip away after the mangalam. This is a fitting testimony to the greatness of their music and the treasure of their impeccable voice (saareera sampath). [1]
Some of their popular compositions include Bhajana Seyave O Manasaa (Kedaram), Amba nannu Brovave (Todi), Intha paraakaa (Naadhanaamakriya, janya of Mayamalavagowla), Paruvam paarkka nyaayamaa (Dhanyasi), Sharanu sharanu (Senchurutti), Etthanaithaan Vitthai Kattraalum (Anandabhairavi), Kaana Kannaayiram Venum (Neelambari), Yeliyenai Marandha (Yadukulakamboji), Vidhi Illaarkku (Kharaharapriya), Varmamaa Enmeedhil (Saveri) and Mahima theliya tharamaa (Sankarabharanam).
The brothers were also regular invited performers for the famous Varahur Uriyadi Utsavam celebrated at Varahur during every Krishna Janmashtami replete with festive ambience. The festival attracted thousands of participants from the surrounding villages across the Thanjavur Delta region along the mighty River Kaveri. Thamizh Thaatha U. V. Swaminatha Iyer has written a heart-wrenching incident related to the composition of Podhum Podhum Ayya in Punnagavarali as narrated to him by Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer in his book Puthiyathum Pazhaiyathum under the chapter Thalaimuraikkum Podhum . Podhum Podhum Ayya was sung extemporaneously in the precincts of Varahur (Varaahapuri) Shri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple (https://www.varagur.org/).
The brothers seem to have a few disciples including Vaiyacheri Panchanatha Iyer (or Doraiswamy Iyer, the father of Ramaswamy Iyer and Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer). However, two of the disciplic lineages have gone to produce world-renowned musicians and composers. One set of lineage branching out through their own grandsons Ramaswamy Iyer and Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer, while the other set of disciples branching out via Thanjavur Kamakshi Ammal, the grandmother of the famous Veena artiste Veenai Dhanammal.
One of the last contributions that T. Viswanathan and T. Sankaran made to Carnatic music was to edit the available compositions of the Anai Ayya brothers (published by Brihaddhvani). [2]
Carnatic music, known as Karnāṭaka saṃgīta or Karnāṭaka saṅgītam in the South Indian languages, is a system of music commonly associated with South India, including the modern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala,Tamil Nadu, Telangana and portions of southern Orissa. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu texts and traditions, particularly the Samaveda. The other subgenre is Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian or Islamic influences from Northern India. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style.
The Pancharatna kritis are a set of five kritis (songs) in Carnatic classical music, composed by the 18th-century Indian composer Tyagaraja. All the kritis, as is the case with almost all of Tyagaraja's compositions, are penned in Telugu. The songs are: "Jagadananda karaka", "Dudukugala Nanne", "Sadhinchene", "Kanakana Ruchira" and "Endaro Mahanubhavulu".
Muthuswami Dikshitar (Mudduswamy Dikshitar) (IAST: muttusvāmi dīkṣitar, 24 March 1776 – 21 October 1835), mononymously Dikshitar, was a South Indian poet, singer and veena player, and a composer of Indian classical music, who is considered one of the musical trinity of Carnatic music. Muthuswami Dikshitar was born on 24 March 1776 in Tiruvarur near Thanjavur, in what is now the state of Tamil Nadu in India, to a family that is traditionally traced back to Virinichipuram in the northern boundaries of the state.
Syama Sastri or Shyama Shastri was a musician and composer of Carnatic music. He was the oldest among the Trinity of Carnatic music, Tyagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar being the other two.
Thyagaraja Aradhana is an annual aradhana of Telugu saint composer Tyagaraja. The music festival is observed in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, primarily in Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu, the place where Tyagaraja attained Jeeva Samadhi. The aradhana is observed on Pushya Bahula Panchami day when the saint attained Jeeva samadhi, where the musicians render the saint's Pancharatna Kritis.
Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, commonly known as Muthiah Bhagavatar, is one of Carnatic classical music's famous twentieth-century composers. He also created about 20 ragas.
Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer was one of the great Indian Carnatic vocalists. He won several awards including Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Sangeetha Bhupathy.
Subbarama Dikshitar (1839–1906) was a Carnatic music composer. He was the grandson, and also the adopted son, of Baluswami Dikshitar, a brother of Muthuswami Dikshitar. He was an accomplished composer in his own right, but is more famous for his Sangita Sampradaya Pradarshini, a book detailing the works of Muthuswami Dikshitar and a reference on many other Carnatic musical concepts.
Akumadugula Manambuchavadi Venkatasubbaiyya (1803–1862) was a Carnatic music vocalist and composer. He composed the varnam Jalajakshi, in raga Hamsadhwani. He was the cousin and a direct student of the famous composer Tyagaraja. He was also an accomplished singer and a renowned teacher. He was a scholar in Telugu and Sanskrit. He composed in Telugu Language.
Vaidyanatha Sivan was a composer and vocalist of Carnatic music. He was a great exponent of extemporaneous singing. He also composed a ragamalika with all the 72 melakartha ragas.
Madurai Mani Iyer was an Indian Carnatic music singer, who was famous for his unique style. He was one of the most highly celebrated carnatic vocalists during the first half of the 20th century. He was renowned for his adept skills at singing kalpana swarams, neraval, and raga alapana. His music continues to be highly regarded today.
Patnam Subramania Iyer was a composer and singer of Carnatic music. Subramaniya Iyer followed the traditions of the great composer Tyagaraja. He has left behind almost one hundred compositions.
Musiri Subramania Iyer was a Carnatic vocalist whose stage performing career spanned the 1920s to the 1940s. After retirement from the stage, he remained an iconic figure in Carnatic music as a dedicated teacher and leader in the Carnatic community. His bhava-laden renditions of Carnatic songs have become the measuring stick for generations of Carnatic vocalists. Musiri Subramania Iyer is considered one of the giants of Carnatic music in the twentieth century.
The Kingdom of Mysore (1399–1950) was founded by Yaduraya in 1399 as a feudatory of the Vijayanagara Empire and became an independent kingdom in the early 17th century, after the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire. Many musicians and composers have presumably adorned the courts of the Mysore kings from Yaduraya's time, furthering the Dakshinadi school of music that had developed in earlier centuries. However, records are only available from the time of King Ranadheera Kanteerava Narasaraja Wodeyar (1638). Musical treatises surviving from this time, though, provide ample information on the music, musical instruments, the types of compositions, the raga (melodies) and the tala (rhythms) used. Though all the Mysore kings patronised music, the golden age of Carnatic music was considered to be during the reigns of Kings Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (1794–1868), Chamaraja Wodeyar IX (1862–1894), Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV (1884–1940) and Jaya Chamaraja Wodeyar (1919–1974). The reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV is regarded as particularly important in musical terms.
The Haridaasas, the Vaishnava saints of Karnataka, are classified into the Vyaasakuta and Daasakuta. The Vyaasakuta were the pontifical saints known for their scholarship and exposition of Madhva's philosophy. The Daasakuta were the peripatetic saint disciples of the Vyaasakuta sanyasins. They were proficient singers and composers and used classical music and the Kannada language as a medium to propagate the teachings and philosophy of the Dvaita school. While Sripadaraya is sometimes credited with starting this musical movement, Purandaradaasa, a disciple of Vyaasasraaya, became renowned as Karnataka Sangita Pitaamaha.
Sri Sarabha Sastri (1872–1904) was an Indian venu flute player, known as the first great Brahmin flutist. He brought the flute to the mainstream Indian Carnatic concert stage – until then, it was almost exclusively a folk instrument. To Sastri goes the credit of promoting the flute to the status of a primary concert instrument from being a mere 'second fiddle' to dance.
Simizhi Sundaram Iyer (1884–1927) was a Carnatic music composer.
T. M. Thyagarajan fondly known as TMT was a Carnatic vocalist and musicologist from Tamil Nadu in Southern India. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1981.
"Vatapi Ganapatim", also known as "Vatapi ganapatim bhajeham" or "Vatapi ganapatim bhaje", is a Sanskrit kriti song by the South Indian poet-composer Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835), one of the "Trinity of Carnatic music". The panegyrical hymn praises Vatapi Ganapati, Ganesha (Ganapati) worshipped in a shrine in Tiruchenkattankudi Utrapatishwaraswamy Temple dedicated to lord Shiva in Thiruvarur district in the Tamil Nadu state of India. The hymn is composed in Hamsadhvani raga ; however, in tradition of kritis, individual performers add their own variations in the tune as a part of improvisation. Vatapi Ganapatim is considered the best-known piece of Muthuswami Dikshitar and is one of the most popular compositions of Carnatic music. The hymn is traditionally sung at the beginning of many Carnatic music concerts.
