The 2009 Anchorage Mayoral Election was held on April 7, 2009, with a runoff election between the top two candidates occurring on May 5, as no candidate reached a 45% plurality needed to win outright. Fifteen candidates competed for the post, with former State Rep. Eric Croft and former Anchorage Assemblyman Dan Sullivan proceeding to the runoff election, which Sullivan won with 57% of the vote. Anchorage is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. state of Alaska. With an estimated 298,192 residents in 2016, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 401,635 in 2016, which accounts for more than half of the state's population. At 1,706 square miles of land area, the city is the fourth largest city by land in the United States and larger than the smallest state, Rhode Island, at 1,212 square miles.
Matthew W. "Matt" Claman is an American politician from Anchorage, Alaska. A Democrat, he serves in the Alaska House of Representatives, is a member of the Alaska House Majority Coalition, and is the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee.
Eric Chancy Croft is an American lawyer and current member of the Anchorage Assembly, representing Anchorage's West district. From 1997 to 2006, Croft served five terms as the Alaska State Representative for District 15, representing Spenard, Anchorage. He was also a candidate in the August 2006 Democratic gubernatorial primary election in Alaska. He received 23.1% of the vote, losing to 68.6% achieved by former governor Tony Knowles (D). Croft served as Anchorage's school board president from 2013 to 2016. In April 2016 he was elected to the Anchorage Assembly, replacing Ernie Hall, who decided not to run for reelection.
Walter Carleton "Walt" Monegan III is the former Police Chief of Anchorage, Alaska, and later Commissioner of Public Safety for the state of Alaska. His dismissal in July 2008 by Alaska governor Sarah Palin drew considerable attention, particularly in the wake of Palin's selection as the Vice-Presidential nominee of the Republican Party the following month. Monegan accused Palin of not telling the truth about the reasons for his dismissal.
