Rathnam. The film is produced by V. Vijay Kumar Varma under VMC Productions. The film stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Bhumika Chawla, and Ankitha, with Mukesh Rishi, Nassar, and Rahul Dev playing supporting roles. The film has music composed by M. M. Keeravani while the cinematography and editing are done by Ravindra Babu and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao respectively.

Bhalevadivi Basu created a lot of hype since it followed the stupendous hit of Narasimha Naidu and was intended to be an image make-over for Nandamuri Balakrishna from action hero to family hero. The film was not commercially successful.

It is a loose remake of Tamil film Thunaivan. It was the second box office flop in the career of Rajesh Khanna since the beginning of his 17 consecutive hits from 1969 to 1971. The film was critically acclaimed. There were other films of Khanna which were running well at the box office, such as Mere Jeevan Saathi, Apna Desh, Amar Prem and Shehzada in the same year, due to which this spiritual film was not screened by in many theatres by distributors, due to which producers suffered losses.
