Andrew Bain is the principal horn player of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the horn instructor at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Education

Bain was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia. Remaining in his home town, he studied music at Brighton Secondary School's Special Interest Music Centre where he was 'Dux of Music' in 1990. Subsequently, he graduated from the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide for his undergraduate studies. He left Adelaide in 1994 to study with Geoff Collinson in Sydney and Hector McDonald in Vienna. He earned a Graduate Degree in 2003, from the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany, studying with Will Sanders and specializing in Chamber Music. [1] [2] [3]

Musical career

Bain's career began when he won the Associate Principal horn position in Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, his hometown orchestra. He played there from 1997 to 2000, until he won the job in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, where he was Principal horn from 2000 to 2001. In 2001, when he began pursuing graduate work in Karlsruhe, Germany, he was Principal Horn in the Münchner Symphoniker. Upon returning to Australia in 2003, Andrew Bain was Principal horn in the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House until 2005. [1] [2] [4] [5] In 2003, Bain also joined the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra as Principal horn, as holder of the Avenir Foundation Endowed Chair, and as a featured soloist. In 2005, Bain returned to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra until he was hired by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2009.

In 2004, Bain founded the New Sydney Wind Quintet. Bain can be heard on their discography 'NSWQ Debut CD." He remained with the group until 2010. [4]

In May 2011, Bain was hired by Gustavo Dudamel as the principal horn player of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He holds the John Cecil Bessell Chair. He has played with the orchestra in the Walt Disney Concert Hall on significant concert series such as the Mahler Project of the 2012 season. [1] [2] He was principal horn on the soundtrack of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. [6]

Bain was a lecturer in Horn at the Sydney Conservatorium from 2004 to 2009. [4] Since 2012, He has been on faculty as the horn instructor at the Colburn School. [7]

During his studies in Germany and his career in Australia, Bain played on a Gebr. Alexander 103. [8] While auditioning in the United States, however, he switched to an Atkinson Geyer AG2000. [9] [10]

City Noir is a symphonic work by the composer John Adams. A primary inspiration for the piece is the work of historian Kevin Starr on urban California in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The composer characterizes the work as "jazz-inflected symphonic music", citing the French composer Darius Milhaud as originator of this trend. Ernest Martin Fleischmann was a German-born American impresario who served for 30 years as executive director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which he upgraded to become a top-ranked orchestra. A talented musician, he chose a career on the business aspect of music, rather than a life as a conductor.

Naive and Sentimental Music is a symphonic work by American composer John Adams. The title of the work alludes to an essay by Friedrich Schiller, On Naïve and Sentimental Poetry, that contrasts a creative personality that creates art for its own sake versus one conscious of other purposes, such as art’s place in history. The composer cites both the slowly developing harmonies of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony and the atmosphere of the Sonoma coastline as inspirations for the work. The piece was co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Ensemble Modern, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. It received its first public performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen on February 19, 1999. A recording by Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic was subsequently released by Nonesuch Records.

Symphony No. 9 is Philip Glass's ninth symphony. It was written between 2010 and 2011. It is written in 3 movements. The work was jointly commissioned by the Bruckner Orchester Linz, Carnegie Hall, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

The Pasadena Symphony and POPS is an American orchestra based in Pasadena, California. In 2010 it took up residence at the Ambassador Auditorium, where its Classics Series runs from October through April. Since 2012 it performs a summer series at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden from June through September.

Nyx is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. The work was jointly commissioned by Radio France, the Barbican Centre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, and the Finnish Broadcasting Company. It was premiered February 19, 2011 in the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, with Salonen conducting the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. The piece is titled after the Goddess Nyx from Greek mythology.

Soundings is a single-movement orchestral composition by the American composer John Williams. It was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the inaugural season of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It was first performed on October 25, 2003 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Williams.

True Fire is a song cycle for solo baritone and orchestra by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. The work was jointly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France. It was first performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on May 14, 2015, by the baritone Gerald Finley and Los Angeles Philharmonic under the conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Karawane is a composition for chorus and orchestra by the Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. The work was jointly commissioned by the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic with support from the philanthropist Marie-Josée Kravis, the Bamberg Symphony, and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. It was first performed by the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich and the Zürcher Sing-Akademie conducted by Lionel Bringuier in the Tonhalle, Zürich, on September 10, 2014. The piece is set to the eponymous poem by the German author and Dadaist Hugo Ball.

Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic's initiative to establish youth orchestra programs in underprivileged communities throughout Los Angeles. Modeled on Venezuela's El Sistema, a program which brings classical music education to children from low-income communities, YOLA provides free instruments, music training, and academic support to nearly 800 students age 6-18. A "social project first and artistic project second", 100% of YOLA's 2016 graduating class completed high school, and 90% went on to college.

From Space I Saw Earth is a composition for orchestra and three conductors by the Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason. The piece was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and was premiered with Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Zubin Mehta to celebrate the orchestra's centennial on October 24, 2019.
