In 2018, the siblings became the first ice dancers who are both of Asian descent to medal at the Olympics. They are the second sibling duo to ever share an ice dancing Olympic medal, and the first from the United States. The Shibutani siblings are often referred to by their nickname the Shib Sibs.

Melanie Bruce is an English former ice dancer who represented the United Kingdom. Competing together with Andrew Place, she won the 1992 British national title. They finished 17th at the 1992 European Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland; 17th at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France; and 19th at the 1992 World Championships in Oakland, California, United States.
Danielle Harrison is an English figure skater. She won the British senior national title in December 2015.
