Andrew Igbonule Uchendu is a Nigerian politician. He is currently a member of the Senate of Nigeria representing the Rivers East senatorial district. [1] He had always been a member of the People's Democratic Party until 2014 when he switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress party. [2] Between 2003 and 2015, he represented the Ikwerre–Emohua constituency in the Federal House of Representatives. [2]
Uchendu was born in Mgbuitanwo, Emohua, to the royal family of Uchendu Osi. He obtained his First School leaving Certificate in 1962, West African School Certificate in 1971 and proceeded to the Hope Waddell Training Institution in Calabar, where he earned his Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 1973. He holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) Second Class (Upper Division). [3]
He worked in many organizations, including the Rivers State Ministry of Commerce and Industry; Nigerian Agricultural and Cooperative Bank Ltd., Kaduna; and the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority. In March 1985, he was appointed the general manager/chief executive officer of Risonpalm Ltd. In 1989, he was elevated to the position of managing director/chief executive officer, and thus became the first managing director of a Rivers State-owned company. During his tenure in Risonpalm, the company made profits in seven consecutive years. [4]
Uchendu was a 1992 recipient of the Federal Government National Productivity Merit Award, the highest honour that can be conferred on any worker in the public service in Nigeria. He was in 1994 drafted into politics by the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation. He represented Emohua, Ikwerre and Obio/Akpor LGAs at the 1994/1995 National Constitutional Conference.
One of the best members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Uchendu has moved six crucial motions. These include the motions on Ogbakiri crises, Rehabilitation of the East/West Expressway, Establishment of the Oloibiri Oil Museum, Youth Unemployment and Youth Restiveness in Nigeria, Insecurity in the Niger Delta, and the Invasion of the Rivers State House of Assembly by Hoodlums. He has, in addition, sponsored three fundamental Bills in the House. They are the Standard Tendering Procedure for the Award of Contracts in the Public Service (popularly known as Due Process), the National Youth Development Programme, and the Amendment to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund Act. From his personal savings, he embarked on the award of bursaries to indigent students in the Tertiary institutions in his Constituency. In the first phase, he had 64 Beneficiaries, two in each ward of the Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency. In the second phase, he extended the Bursary to about 140 Beneficiaries, 5 students per ward in his Federal Constituency. Already, payment for the first year has been completed.
In addition, he has facilitated the employment of over 15 Constituents into the Federal Public Service and Parastatals.
As a result of his services to the Community, he was conferred with the Chieftaincy Title of Ochi Aliri II of Emohua and only recently, he was initiated into (Ohna), the highest Traditional Council in Emohua Kingdom.
It is in consideration of all these that Rt. (Hon.) Andrew Uchendu was conferred with yet another Honour in 2008, the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
He is married with five children.
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is a Nigerian politician, he served as the federal minister of transportation of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022 under the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari. He resigned to contest for Nigeria's presidency under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). He previously served as governor of oil-rich Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007. On 9 April 2022, Amaechi declared his interest to contest in the presidential election in 2023, he came second in the APC presidential primaries held in June 2022 behind eventually winner Bola Tinubu with 316 votes from the delegates.
Rivers State House of Assembly is the legislative branch of the Government of Rivers State inaugurated in 1979. It is a unicameral body with 32 members elected into 32 state constituencies. The current Speaker of the State Assembly is Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, DSSRS.
The Ikwerre are the largest ethnic group in Rivers State. Traditional history has classified Ikwerre into seven groups called "Ikwerre Essa". They are Elele, Isiokpo, Rumuji, Emohua, Choba, Aluu, Igwuruta and Obio group. This division was first documented by Forde and Jones; (1950) in their ethnographic study of the native languages and peoples of South- Southern Nigeria. It was also in line with this grouping those seven customary Courts were established in Ikwerre during the Colonial administration. These Courts were located at Elele, Isiokpo, Umuji, Emohua, Choba, Aluu and Obio in Ikwerreland.
Ogba–Egbema–Ndoni is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria under Rivers West Senatorial District, with its headquarters at Omoku. With about 258,700 People according to 2006 Census, It is bounded by Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Anambra states and also by Ahoada West, Ahoada East and Emohua Local Government Areas of Rivers State. They are part of the Igbo speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards and the Egbema and Ndoni Tribes with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. Etche is one of the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State and amongst the 13 federal constituencies representing River State in Nigeria's National Assembly and part of the Rivers East Senatorial District. Its people are Igbo and speak Etche dialect.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Rivers State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Rivers State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
