Andrew Dudley Roe KFSM (born July 1974 [1] ) is a former British Army officer and firefighter currently serving as the Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade. [2]
Andy Roe grew up in London and graduated from Newcastle University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature.[ citation needed ]
In 1997,Roe was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and joined the 12th Regiment Royal Artillery as a second lieutenant. [3] During his time as an officer,he served as a troop commander and a battery captain and served two tours in Northern Ireland. [4] During his time in Northern Ireland,he was wounded when a pipe bomb was thrown at him,which also severely injured an RUC officer stood next to Roe. [5] The officer died after spending four weeks on a life support machine. As a captain,he transferred his commission to the Army reserve in April 2000. [6]
In 2002,Roe joined the London Fire Brigade as a firefighter [7] and in January 2017 was appointed as Assistant Commissioner. [8]
During the Grenfell Tower fire,Roe was appointed incident commander where he revoked the controversial 'stay put' advice to the residents. [9] As the first commissioner appointed since the fire,Roe issued a plea to the residents of London's 7,000 high rise blocks to set aside any 'post-Grenfell doubts continue to follow firefighters’advice in the event of a blaze.' [10]
On 28 January 2020,Roe became the first LFB commissioner to sign the Armed Forces Covenant with the British Armed Forces. [11]
Roe was awarded the King's Fire Service Medal (KFSM) in the 2024 New Year Honours. [12]

Field Marshal John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker,6th Viscount Gort,was a senior British Army officer. As a young officer during the First World War,he was decorated with the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of the Canal du Nord. During the 1930s he served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff. He is best known for commanding the British Expeditionary Force that was sent to France in the first year of the Second World War,only to be evacuated from Dunkirk the following year. Gort later served as Governor of Gibraltar and Malta,and High Commissioner for Palestine and Transjordan.
Field Marshal Richard Michael Power Carver,Baron Carver,was a senior British Army officer. Lord Carver served as the Chief of the General Staff (CGS),the professional head of the British Army,and then as the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS),the professional head of the British Armed Forces. He served with distinction during the Second World War and organised the administration of British forces deployed in response to the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya and later in his career provided advice to the British government on the response to the early stages of The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Field Marshal Peter Anthony Inge,Baron Inge,was a senior British Army officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff,the professional head of the British Army,from 1992 to 1994 and then served as Chief of the Defence Staff before retiring in 1997. On 14 June 2017,a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington,West London,at 00:54 BST and burned for 60 hours. Seventy people died at the scene and two people died later in hospital,with more than 70 injured and 223 escaping. It was the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom since the 1988 Piper Alpha oil-platform disaster and the worst UK residential fire since the Blitz of World War II.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry is a British public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire,which killed 72 people and destroyed Grenfell Tower,a residential building in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea,London,on 14 June 2017. It was ordered by Prime Minister Theresa May on the day following the fire.
Criticism of the response to the Grenfell Tower fire primarily consisted of condemnation of issues with the emergency response and fire safety regulation practices in the UK at the time. Broader political criticism was also directed at British society,including condemnation of the response by governmental bodies and UK politicians,social divisions,deregulation issues,and poor transparency overall.
