Angelo is a Japanese visual kei rock supergroup, formed in 2006 by three members of Pierrot. Originally a trio of vocalist Kirito, bassist Kohta and drummer Takeo, guitarists Karyu (ex-D'espairsRay) and Giru (ex-Vidoll) joined in 2011. After 15 years and 13 studio albums, Angelo began an indefinite hiatus following two concerts at Yoyogi Daini Taiikukan on January 15 and 16, 2022.

History

Four months after Pierrot disbanded, Kirito, Kohta and Takeo formed Angelo on August 14, 2006. They held "The Creature was Reborn Out of Hades" free concert at Yoyogi Park on October 4 to an audience of 5,000. [1] The trio produced their first single, aptly titled "Reborn", on November 8 and began the Broken World, After the Heaven tour three days later. [2] They released their first album Rebirth of Newborn Baby on April 18, 2007, and quickly followed it with the mini-album The Freak Show on December 21. [3]

In 2008, they released the singles "Chaotic Bell" and "Sister" on June and October 22, respectively. Also in October, Angelo held fan-club only activities in Los Angeles, including a concert at the Whisky a Go Go. [4] The band released their second album Metallic Butterfly on April 22, 2009. [5] Angelo performed at the two-day V-Rock Festival '09 on October 24, 2009. [6] They held their first New Year's countdown concert on December 31, 2009 at the second gymnasium at Yoyogi National Gymnasium. [7]

Their sixth single, "Hikari no Kioku" released on February 17, 2010, was used as the ending theme song of the Tegami Bachi anime. [8] Likewise, the next single "El Dorado" was used as the first ending theme of the Sengoku Basara II anime, before being replaced by its follow up "Fate". [9] All three songs were included on the album Design, released on October 6, 2010. [10]

Their eighth single "Calvary" went on sale on February 22, 2011. [11] Before the release of the album Babel on October 5, guitarists Karyu and Giru, whose bands D'espairsRay and Vidoll both disbanded that same year, joined Angelo as full members in August. [12] On August 17, 2012, Angelo hosted their first Intersection of Dogma concert ay Shibuya-AX, where they performed alongside Merry, Sadie, Girugamesh and lynch. [13] The album Retina was released on November 14 in four editions, limited edition A came with a DVD of the first half of their June 30 concert at NHK Hall, while limited edition B included the second half. [14]

2013's Intersection of Dogma event was held at Shibuya-AX on August 16 with lynch., Inoran, Mucc and heidi. [13] Angelo's album Faith was released on November 27. [15] Intersection of Dogma 2014 was held on July 29 at Zepp Diver City and featured lynch., Fake?, Rize and a one night only reunion performance by D'espairsRay. [16] In May 2015, Angelo began their eleven date Creating a Singularity tour. The fourth installment of their annual Intersection of Dogma concert was held on August 5 and included D'erlanger, Cali Gari, lynch. and Diaura. [17]

Angelo covered "Dummy Blue" by D'erlanger for the 2017 D'erlanger Tribute Album ~Stairway to Heaven~. [18] Their twelfth studio album, Evolve, was released on November 11, 2020. [19] It was supported by The Forced Evolve tour, which began on November 17 and ended on January 10, 2021 at Tsutaya O-East. [20] Angelo then began a tour titled The Countdown on April 30, which ended on July 13 following postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. [21] [22] They also performed a hall tour called Mephisto Decided from June 26 to August 1. [22]

On August 1, 2021, Angelo announced that they would be going on indefinite hiatus in January 2022. [23] They performed 15th anniversary concerts at Toyosu Pit on October 3 and 4 and released the album Circle on November 17. The album was supported by The End of Circle tour from November 20 to January 9, before the band performed their final concerts, titled Connected New Circles, at Yoyogi Daini Taiikukan on January 15 and 16, 2022. Luna Sea is a Japanese rock band formed in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1986. Due to the use of makeup and costumes early in their career and their widespread popularity, they are considered one of the most successful and influential bands in the visual kei movement. Throughout the mid-1990s they used significantly less makeup, and after a one-year break in 1997, came back with a more mainstream alternative rock style and toned down their on-stage attire. They disbanded in 2000. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked Luna Sea at number 90 on their list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts.

Hideto Matsumoto, known professionally as hide, was a Japanese musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the rock band X Japan from 1987 to 1997 and a solo artist from 1993 onward. He also formed the United States-based rock supergroup Zilch in 1996.

D'espairsRay was a Japanese visual kei rock band active from 1999 to 2011. The lineup of Hizumi on vocals, Karyu on guitar, Zero on bass and Tsukasa on drums remained the same, with the group having released four full-length records, three EPs and thirteen singles. Outside Japan, D'espairsRay have toured Europe and North America and had domestic releases in those territories.

Vidoll was a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 2002. Their concept was "Occult Romance". After going major, they had several top 40 singles before disbanding in 2011.

Pierrot was a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 1994 in Nagano. After changing their name from Dizy-Lizy to Pierrot and several member changes, the final lineup was completed in 1995 with Kirito on vocals, Jun and Aiji on guitar, Kohta on bass and Takeo on drums. After roughly ten years together, Pierrot disbanded in 2006. Their final single was named "Hello", an apt title for a band who started their major career with an album called Finale.

Kiyonobu Inoue, better known exclusively by his stage name Inoran, is a Japanese musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and co-founder of the rock band Luna Sea since 1986. He started his solo career in 1997. Luna Sea disbanded in 2000, and he formed Fake? with Oblivion Dust vocalist Ken Lloyd a year later. In 2005 he left Fake? and founded Tourbillon with Luna Sea vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura and Hiroaki Hayama. He rejoined Luna Sea when they reunited in 2010, and in 2012 formed Muddy Apes with bassist Taka Hirose and guitarist Dean Tidey, both from Feeder, and 8otto's vocalist Maeson.

D'erlanger is a Japanese rock band from Kyoto Prefecture, formed in 1983 by guitarist Cipher and bassist Seela. While they originally played speed and power metal, after recruiting drummer Tetsu and vocalist Kyo they switched to a punk rock sound for their debut album La Vie En Rose in 1989. Although it was on an indie label, it sold out and was reissued three times that year, earning them a major label record deal with BMG Japan the following year. They released Basilisk in March 1990 and it reached the top five on the charts. However, in December the group suddenly announced their disbandment.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Deadman (band)</span> Japanese rock band

Deadman is a Japanese rock band founded in Nagoya in 2000. The group gained notoriety for popularizing the Nagoya kei subgenre of visual kei, which is a lot "darker" than most and focuses more on musical composition. Deadman also quickly became known for vocalist Mako's heavily melancholic lyrical themes, with the music itself touching on alternative rock in sound. The group disbanded in 2006 without explanation. Mako and guitarist Aie reunited as Deadman in 2019.

Kamaitachi (かまいたち) was a Japanese visual kei punk rock band, formed in Kyoto and active from 1985 to 1991. Their album Hachamecha Kyou reached number 10 on the Oricon chart and was named one of the top albums from 1989 to 1998 in a 2004 issue of the music magazine Band Yarouze. They have performed several times since reuniting for a one-off performance in 2015.

Lazzaro is the third album by the Japanese rock band D'erlanger, released on March 14, 2007. Their first release in 17 years, it reached number 32 on the Oricon chart.

<i>Derlanger</i> (album) 2009 studio album by Derlanger

D'erlanger is the self-titled fifth album by Japanese rock band D'erlanger, released on November 11, 2009. It reached number 19 on the Oricon chart. The limited edition came with a DVD of the music video for "Angelic Poetry" and other material. "Easy Make, Easy Mark" was a speed metal song the band wrote and played back in the 1980s. For 2017's D'erlanger Tribute Album ~Stairway to Heaven~, "Easy Make, Easy Mark" was covered by Dir En Grey.

Heidi. is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Tokyo in February 2006. They gained popularity after performing at the memorial concert on the 10th anniversary of the death of the musician hide on May 4, 2008, to tens of thousands of people. Their third album was released in Europe by Gan-Shin records in 2009 and the following year Heidi. signed to major label Geneon Universal Entertainment.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dead End (band)</span> Japanese heavy metal/hard rock band

Dead End was a Japanese heavy metal/hard rock band formed in Tokyo in late 1984. Following the release of their debut album Dead Line in 1986, the classic lineup of vocalist Morrie, bassist Crazy Cool Joe, guitarist You and drummer Minato was solidified in May 1987. They released three more studio albums and were one of few Japanese metal bands to have international exposure in the United States during the eighties, before dissolving in 1990.

Karyu is a Japanese visual kei rock/metal musician, best known as the guitarist and main composer for the now disbanded D'espairsRay. He is now in Angelo, which he joined in 2011.

Aldious is a Japanese heavy metal band from Osaka, formed in 2008 by guitarist Yoshi and vocalist Rami. After a few member changes, they released their debut EP Dear Slave the following year and soon after formed their own record label, Bright Star Records. A stabilized line-up including guitarist Toki, bassist Sawa and drummer Aruto was established by 2010. Their first album Deep Exceed (2010) reached the top 15 on the Oricon chart, as did their second Determination (2011). However, Rami announced she was leaving the group in June 2012 and new vocalist Re:NO joined Aldious just one month later. They produced their third album District Zero in 2013 and it became their highest-charting release to date, reaching number 7.

Mary's Blood is a Japanese all-female heavy metal band from Tokyo, formed in 2009 by four former members of Destrose. It consists of vocalist Eye, drummer Mari, guitarist Saki and bassist Rio since 2012. After releasing three EPs as an independent band, they signed to Nippon Columbia for their first album, Countdown to Evolution (2014). Mary's Blood then switched to Victor Entertainment for the release of Bloody Palace (2015) and Fate (2016). They signed to Tokuma Japan Communications in 2018 and released three further studio albums, including their highest-charting, Confessions (2019). Mary's Blood began an indefinite hiatus on April 9, 2022.

Destrose was a Japanese heavy metal band formed in 2007. The group remained an independent band their entire career and experienced frequent line-up changes until going on indefinite hiatus in 2015. Although considered pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom, Destrose never achieved commercial success and is best known for the subsequent bands later formed by its many members.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saki (musician)</span> Japanese musician (born 1990)

Saki is a Japanese heavy metal musician and songwriter. She is best known as guitarist of the all-female band Mary's Blood from 2012 until they began an indefinite hiatus in 2022, and was also a member of the all-female band Nemophila from 2019 to 2024. She is currently active as a solo artist and as one-half of the duo Amahiru with Frédéric Leclercq. Saki has been sponsored by Killer Guitars for over ten years, and often uses custom-made Fascist models. In 2021, they released her signature model, the seven-string KG-Fascinator Seven the Empress.
