Angelo Cardona (born 5 January 1997) is a Colombian social entrepreneur, peace and human rights activist. He is representative of Latin America to the International Peace Bureau. [1] [2] Co-founder and President of the Ibero-American Alliance for Peace [3] and ambassador of Colombia to the Youth Assembly at the United Nations. [4] In 2021, he won The Diana Award. [5]

Career

Cardona has denounced the human rights violation that his country is experiencing in different international decision-making scenarios such as the United Nations Headquarters, European Parliament, German Parliament, British Parliament, United States Congress, Argentina Congress and Colombian Congress. [6] [7] [8]

He served as peace ambassador of the Global Peace Chain from 2020 to 2022, [2] [9] [10] and in 2018 was invited as a speaker by the Amnesty International group in Berlin, to share his knowledge about the implementation of the peace agreement in Colombia. [11]

He is part of the Youth for Disarmament initiative of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and was among the winners of the '75 words for disarmament' launched by the United Nations to commemorate the 75 years of its foundation and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 2016, at age 19, he became member of the International Peace Bureau, [7] [8] and co-founded the International Peace Bureau Youth Network (IPBYN). [17] [1] [18] In 2019, Cardona was appointed Council member of the International Peace Bureau. [19]

Cardona is also part of the international Steering Group for the Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS). [20] As part of the campaign in 2020, together with 28 Colombian members of Congress, he proposed the transfer of 1 billion Colombian pesos from military purposes to the health sector. The Colombian Ministry of Defense agreed to 10 per cent of that, moving 100 million pesos (or US$25 million). [21] [22] [23] In 2021, he supported by 33 Colombian members of congress demanded the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, allocate 1 billion pesos from the defense sector to the health sector. [24] Cardona also requested the Government to refrain from purchasing 24 warplanes that would cost $4.5 million dollars. [25] [26] According to him, with that money, the government could purchase at least 300,000 vaccines against Covid-19 and strengthen the health system in the country. [27] [28] [29] On May 4, 2021, amid violent protests unleashed in Colombia as a result of the proposal for a new tax reform. [30] The Minister of Finance, José Manuel Restrepo, announced that the Government will comply with the request to not purchase the warplanes. [31] [32]

In 1913, Henri La Fontaine was also awarded the Prize "[For his work as] head of the International Peace Bureau". As of 2012, eleven other Nobel Peace Prize laureates have been members of the IPB.

Luciano Marín Arango, better known as Iván Márquez, is a Colombian guerrilla leader, member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), part of its secretariat higher command and advisor to the Northwestern and Caribbean blocs. He was part of the FARC negotiators that concluded a peace agreement with President Juan Manuel Santos. On 29 August 2019, Márquez abandoned the peace process and announced a renewed armed conflict with the Colombian government.

Humberto de la Calle Lombana is a Colombian lawyer and politician. He served as Vice President of Colombia from 1994 to 1997. De La Calle served in the cabinet as Interior Minister under two Presidents, Andrés Pastrana and César Gaviria. He also served as Ambassador to Spain and the United Kingdom. After 2003, De La Calle worked at his own Law firm which specialises in advising and representing international clients in Colombia. In October 2012 he was appointed by President Juan Manuel Santos as the chief negotiator in the peace process with the FARC.

The Categoría Primera C is the third division tournament of football in Colombia, which is amateur in nature. It is organized by the División Aficionada del Fútbol Colombiano (Difútbol), an entity dependent on the Colombian Football Federation (FCF). Despite being called Primera C and being within the federative football system, it does not grant promotion to the professional Primera B, which is organized by the División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (Dimayor). According to a study made in 2020, Colombia was the only country in the top 20 of the FIFA ranking lacking a third tier football league linked to its league system. The current champion is Total Soccer from Medellín, who won the competition's 2022 edition.

Miss Colombia 2010 was the 58th edition of the Miss Colombia pageant. It was held on November 15, 2010 in Cartagena, Colombia.

Fernando Tapias Stahelin was a General (retired) of Colombian Armed Forces. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Colombian Armed Forces for a period of four years (1998–2002) during the presidential term of president Andres Pastrana. After that, he served as ambassador of Colombia in Dominican Republic from 2002 to 2004 and subsequently served as Deputy Minister of Defense for its social and business group for two years from 2009 to 2010 during the presidential term of president Alvaro Uribe. He was in the Colombian Armed Forces for 41 years, achieving all the military ranks all the way up to his appointment as General Commander for the Colombian Armed Forces.

Lady Diana Cardona Miranda, better known as Miranda, is a Colombian singer. At 27 years old she appeared in the first season of Colombian musical competition La Voz Colombia, and was part of Team Ricardo Montaner winning the contest on the final held on December 20, 2012; She received a monetary prize, a contract with the label Universal Music, in addition to sharing the stage with Carlos Vives and Alejandro Sanz in Feria de Manizales. Miranda is also the vocalist of her band Miranda & the Soul Band. She was nominated for Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2016 Colombian peace agreement referendum</span>

The Colombian peace agreement referendum was held on 2 October 2016 to ratify the final agreement on the termination of the Colombian conflict between the Colombian government and the FARC guerillas. It failed with 50.2% voting against it and 49.8% voting in favor. Approval of the referendum was taken for granted in Colombia based on opinion polls. Explanations for the surprising "No" victory fell along the similar ideological lines of Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the Brexit referendum, both also held in 2016.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2016 Nobel Peace Prize</span> Award

The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos "for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220,000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people." The conflict is the longest running war, and last remaining guerrilla struggle, in the Americas. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to those who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The announcement was made on 7 October at a press conference at the Nobel Peace Center, and the formal award ceremony took place on 10 December at the Oslo City Hall.

Fernando Etayo Serna is a Colombian paleontologist and geologist. His contributions on the paleontology in Colombia has been mainly on the descriptions of ammonites and Etayo has helped describing many fossiliferous geologic formations of Colombia. Etayo obtained his MSc. degree in geology and geophysics from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 1963, and his PhD in paleontology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.

The Ibero-American Alliance for Peace (Spanish: Alianza Iberoamericana por la Paz) is an international non-governmental organization working to promote peacebuilding, human rights and disarmament in the Ibero-American region. Co-founded in 2016 by Angelo Cardona and Maria Teresa Barrios in Berlin during the world congress 'Disarm for a Climate of Peace' of the International Peace Bureau. Initially the coalition was the International Peace Bureau Youth Network (IPBYN) for the region of Latin America known under the name of Latin American Youth Network for Peace'

ICIP is a research, dissemination and action organization created by the Parliament of Catalonia in 2007 to promote the culture of peace in Catalan society and internationally and make Catalonia play an active role as an agent of peace in the world.

The Delàs Center for Peace Studies is an independent body involved in analyzing issues like peace, security, defense and disarmament, founded in 1999. First it was linked to Justícia i Pau in Girona, Spain. The center was named after Josep Manuel Delàs, a Catalan military, social activist and pacifist, and chairman of Justícia i Pau. Before settling in Girona, Josep Manuel Delàs was commander of the reserve army and a member of the UMD. Josep Manuel Delàs had been linked to Justícia i Pau from the end of the 1980s until his death in 1999, and president from 1989 to 1995.
