Anna Telugu Desam Party (ATDP) was a regional political party in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was founded by Nandamuri Harikrishna, the third son of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder N. T. Rama Rao (NTR) on 26 January 1999. [1] [2] The party was formed following internal differences within the TDP but struggled to make a electoral impact. Harikrishna eventually returned to the TDP in 2006, and ATDP was delisted by the Election Commission of India in 2016. [3]
Nandamuri Harikrishna established the Anna Telugu Desam Party (ATDP) on 26 January 1999 after a fallout with TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu. [4] Harikrishna had previously sided with Naidu along with the majority of TDP legislators, during the 1995 internal coup within the TDP, which led to his father NTR’s removal as party leader, triggered by dissatisfaction with the involvement of NTR’s second wife, Lakshmi Parvathi in party and state affairs. [5] Following the coup, Harikrishna was appointed as the Minister ot Transport in the Andhra Pradesh state government. However, dissatisfaction with Naidu’s leadership led him to part ways and establish ATDP. [6] [7]
Shortly after its formation, Rajya Sabha MP Daggubati Venkateswara Rao left the Bharatiya Janata Party to join ATDP on 28 January 1999. [8] [9] Another Rajya Sabha MP, Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, also joined the party, giving the party two seats in the upper house of the Parliament of India. [8] [10] Additionally, S. Madhusudhana Chary, who had earlier been a member of the NTR Telugu Desam Party (Lakshmi Parvathi) (NTRTDP-LP), represented ATDP in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. [10] [1]
In the lead-up to the 1999 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, ATDP formed an alliance with the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), both of which had been former allies of the TDP. However, internal disagreements over ATDP’s stance on banning foreign-born individuals, including Sonia Gandhi, from holding the Prime Minister’s position created a rift within the alliance. ATDP fielded 191 candidates in the 1999 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election but failed to win any seats, securing only 371,718 votes (1.12% of the total votes in the state). In the same year’s Lok Sabha elections, the party contested 20 constituencies but again failed to secure any seats, receiving just 244,045 votes (0.73% of the total votes in the state).
The party’s failure to make an electoral impact led to its decline. By 2006, Harikrishna returned to the TDP and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a TDP member in 2008. [14] Over the years, ATDP’s relevance diminished, and in 2016, the party was officially delisted by the Election Commission of India. [15]

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, often referred to by his initials NTR, was an Indian actor, film director, film producer, screenwriter, film editor, philanthropist and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years over four terms. He is regarded as one of the most influential actors of Indian cinema. He starred in over 300 films, predominantly in Telugu cinema, and was referred to as "Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarvabhouma". Rao received three National Film Awards for co-producing Thodu Dongalu (1954) and Seetharama Kalyanam (1960) under National Art Theater, Madras, and for directing Varakatnam (1970). In 1968, The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award, for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2013, Rao was voted as "Greatest Indian Actor of All Time" in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted on the occasion of the Centenary of Indian Cinema.
Nara Chandrababu Naidu, commonly known as CBN, is an Indian politician who is currently serving as the 13th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He holds the record of longest-serving Chief Minister in the political history of Telugu states. He is the national president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Parvathi formed the party after the internal coup in which NTR's son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu took control over TDP in 1995.

Tulla Devender Goud is an Indian politician from the Telugu Desam Party. He founded the Nava Telangana Praja Party (NTP) to fight for separate statehood for the Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh, but later returned to his parent outfit.
The 1996 Indian general election in Andhra Pradesh were held for 42 seats in the state. The result was a victory for the Indian National Congress which won 22 out of 42 seats. This was the first election contested by the TDP since its leader Chandrababu Naidu ousted the party founder N. T. Rama Rao in a palace coup in August 1995 and the latter's untimely death a few months later.
Nandamuri Taraka Ratna was an Indian actor who worked in Telugu cinema. After his debut in Okato Number Kurraadu (2003), he acted in several films as the lead actor and a few as the antagonist. He was a member of the Nandamuri family which is influential in Telugu cinema and politics. Taraka Ratna was also an aspiring politician from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, rooting for the Telugu Desam Party. He died on 18 February 2023 at the age of 39 at Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, following severe health complications.
Lakshmi Parvathi is an Indian politician from the state of Andhra Pradesh and widow of N. T. Rama Rao. She was previously married to a harikatha artist Veeragandham Venkata Subba Rao. Later, she was separated from him and started living together with Rama Rao who officially married her in 1993.
Nara Lokesh is an Indian politician serving as the Minister of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications and the Human Resources Development departments in the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the General Secretary of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He is the son of N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the TDP. Lokesh served as the Minister of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development and the Information Technology, Electronics and Communication departments from 2017 to 2019 while being elected as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in 2017.
The 1999 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was conducted in 3 phases simultaneously with the 1999 Indian general election for the 11th Andhra Pradesh Assembly. The election was held on 4 September 1999, 11 September 1999 and 17 September 1999 for 91, 105 and 98 constitutencies respectively. The election concluded with the Telugu Desam Party sweeping the polls with 180 seats and forming the government once again.
