Brevard County is a county in the U.S. state of Florida. It is on the Atlantic coast of eastern Central Florida. As of the 2020 census,the population was 606,612,making it the 10th-most populated county in Florida. The official county seat is located in Titusville. A secondary center of county administration,including a circuit courthouse,was built in 1989 in the planned community of Viera,Florida,the geographic center of the county.
Florida Institute of Technology is a private research university in Melbourne,Florida. The university comprises four academic colleges:Engineering &Science,Aeronautics,Psychology &Liberal Arts,and Business. Approximately half of Florida Tech's students are enrolled in the College of Engineering &Science. The university's 130-acre primary residential campus is near the Melbourne Orlando International Airport and 16 miles from Patrick Space Force Base. The university was founded in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College to provide advanced education for professionals working in the U.S. space program at the Kennedy Space Center and Space Launch Delta 45 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Since 1966,when it combined the Institute of Technology following University of Central Florida's name change,Florida Tech has gone by its current name Florida Tech. In 2021,Florida Tech had an on-campus student body of 5,693 between its Melbourne Campus,Melbourne Sites,and Education Centers,as well as 3,623 students enrolled in their online programs,almost equally divided between graduate and undergraduate students with the majority focusing their studies on engineering and the sciences. Florida Tech is classified among "R2:Doctoral Universities –High research activity".

Maryly Van Leer Peck was an American academic and college administrator. She founded numerous programs in Guam,one of them being the Community Career College at the University of Guam. She was the first female president of a public institution of higher learning in Florida,the first female president of a Florida community college while president of Polk Community College aka Polk State College. She was one of the first female graduates of the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University and the first woman to graduate with a degree in chemical engineering. She was also the first woman to receive an M.S. and a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Florida. She also founded Society of Women Engineers chapters,and was an active board member.
George Paul "Bud" Peterson is the former president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Peterson is a graduate of Kansas State University,where he earned B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and an M.S. in Engineering,and Texas A&M University,where he earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. On January 7,2019,Peterson announced his upcoming retirement from Georgia Tech,effective summer of 2019. His successor,Ángel Cabrera,assumed the office September 1,2019,after serving for seven years as president of George Mason University in Fairfax,Virginia. In September 2019,the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to name Peterson President Emeritus and Regents Professor of Mechanical Engineering for the standard three-year term. The Board of Regents also awarded him tenure.
