Anthony Smith was the Republican President of the West Virginia Senate from Tyler County and served from 1901 to 1903. [1] [2]
He was born January 9,1844,in Beaver County,Pennsylvania. At age 4,he moved with his father to Virginia (years before the state of West Virginia was created). On August 14,1862,when he was 18 years old,he enrolled in Company F,Fourteenth Regiment,West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He served for two years before being captured. He remained a prisoner of war until the Confederacy was defeated.
He served numerous political offices over the years,including state delegate,state senator,and prosecuting attorney of Tyler County. He was President of the Senate during his last term. In 1888 he was a Presidential elector.
On December 20,1870,he married Martha F. Holland,they had two children,a son and daughter.
He died sometime in the 1920s.
Joseph Ellis Johnson was a farmer,businessman,and politician who served as United States Representative and became the 32nd Governor of Virginia from 1852 to 1856,the first Virginia governor to be popularly elected as well as the only Virginia governor from west of the Appalachian mountains. During the American Civil War,he sympathized with the Confederacy,but returned to what had become West Virginia for his final years.

Mason Mathews was an American merchant and politician in the U.S. State of Virginia. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates,representing Greenbrier County from 1859–1865 as a Whig. This period included the secession of Virginia and the resulting American Civil War of 1861–1865. Though Mathews opposed secession,he chose to support the Confederate States of America when Virginia seceded. Throughout the war,much of his efforts were directed toward the Confederate defense of western Virginia. When his home of Greenbrier County was taken into the new State of West Virginia in 1863,he continued to represent Greenbrier County in Virginia's Confederate legislature in Richmond until war's end. He was a member of the Mathews political family.
Alexander W. Monroe was a prominent American lawyer,politician,and military officer in the U.S. states of Virginia and West Virginia. Monroe served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and West Virginia House of Delegates representing Hampshire County. He was the Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates during the 1875–1877 legislative session. Monroe also represented Hampshire County in the West Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1872.
