Erskine Anton Norris (born 7 January 1940) is a former Barbadian high jumper.
Norris was born in Kirtons,Saint Philip,and first represented Barbados at the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games in Kingston,Jamaica where he won silver in high jump with a jump of 1.98 metres. Three months later at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth,Western Australia,Norris won bronze in the high jump clearing the bar at 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m). [2] In doing so,he became the first athlete to win a bronze medal for Barbados and the first athlete to win a medal of any colour in a sport besides weightlifting for Barbados at the Commonwealth Games. [3] The following year,Norris was part of the inaugural contingent to represent Barbados at the 1963 Pan American Games in São Paulo,Brazil. There he won one of the first medals for his country,bronze in high jump. In 1966,he repeated his performance of four year prior in taking the silver medal at the San Juan Central American and Caribbean Games in the high jump and the bronze in high jump at the Kingston British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Norris was also a cricketer who played in one first-class cricket match for Barbados in February 1963 against British Guiana. Norris,selected in the team is a right-arm fast bowler,took no wickets in the match which British Guiana won by 34 runs. [5]
Norris holds a MBA degree in Management and International Business from New York University Graduate School of Business Administration,and a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Economics and Business Administration from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.
Norris has worked in business development for most of his career,while a senior executive of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation,where he served as a Divisional Director and acting CEO. He was also Director of the Corporation's North American Operations,based in New York. He has assisted the promotion,start-up and development of a large number of local and international businesses and successfully implemented several technical assistance initiatives.
As a consultant,Anton also served as Regional Technical Advisor to the Investment Promotion and Export Development (IPED) Project,in the Economic Affairs Secretariat of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States,under the aegis of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). As of March 2009,Norris was an associate consultant of May Hinds Consulting. [6]
The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 and,with the exception of 1942 and 1946,has successively run every four years since. The event was called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950,the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966,and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. Athletes with a disability are included as full members of their national teams since 2002,making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event. In 2018,the Games became the first global multi-sport event to feature an equal number of men's and women's medal events,and four years later they became the first global multi-sport event to have more events for women than men.
Guyana has competed in seventeen of the twenty previous Commonwealth Games. British Guiana was one of the eleven countries to compete in the first Games in 1930,and participated under that name until 1962. The country gained independence in 1966 as Guyana,and subsequently competed under that name.

The Commonwealth Paraplegic Games were an international,multi-sport event involving athletes with a disability from the Commonwealth countries. The event was sometimes referred to as the Paraplegic Empire Games and British Commonwealth Paraplegic Games. Athletes were generally those with spinal injuries or polio. The Games were an important milestone in the Paralympic sports movement as they began the decline of the Stoke Mandeville Games' dominating influence. The event was first held in 1962 and disestablished in 1974. The Games were held in the country hosting the Commonwealth Games for able-bodied athletes,a tradition eventually fully adopted by the larger Olympic and Paralympic movements.
Ernest Leighton "Ernle" Haisley is a Jamaican former high jumper who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
In 1956 Haisley took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He reached a height of 1.96 metres in the final,placing him 15th.
Haisley represented Jamaica at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games winning gold in the high jump with a height of 6 ft 9 in. This remained the Commonwealth Games high jump record until 1962.
In the following year,he represented British West Indies at the 1959 Pan American Games,winning bronze with a height of 2.00 metres. His final success in major competition was at the Athletics at the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games in Kingston,Jamaica,where he won bronze with a height of 1.94 metres.

The 1959 British West Indies Championships was the third edition of the track and field competition between British colony nations in the Caribbean. It was held in Georgetown in British Guiana. A total of 27 events were contested,twenty-one by men and six by women. This was the first time that women had been able to compete at the event. Three new men's events were added to the programme:3000 metres steeplechase,half marathon,and the 3000 metres walk. The latter two were the first road running and racewalking events to be included.
