Carlos Velasco Badion was a Filipino basketball player. Although born in Lubao, Pampanga, he grew up in Tondo, Manila where he started his checkered career playing in sandlot tournaments and for Abad Santos High School in Manila. Standing at 6'3 1/2" without shoes, he played primarily the power forward position and could play the small forward and center positions. He became famous as a player for the UE Red Warriors team under Coach Baby Dalupan. He played for Ysmael Steel, Meralco and Concepcion Industries in the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association. He became known as a deadly shooting big man from the outside before the three point line was popularized. He was elevated to the Philippine Basketball Association in 1975 with Concepcion Carrier. He played for 7 Up from 1976 to 1977. The 7-Up franchise was acquired in 1978 by Filmanbank and Mariano played his final season with Filmanbank. He is the pride and joy of the Marianos of Malabon.
UAAP Season 74 was the 2011–2012 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. It was hosted by Ateneo de Manila University. The men's basketball and the women's volleyball tournaments were aired by ABS-CBN Channel 2 and Studio 23 for the twelfth consecutive year. The opening ceremony was held on July 9, 2011 at the Marikina Sports Center.

The 1954 UAAP men's basketball tournament was the 17th year of the men's tournament of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)'s basketball championship. Hosted by University of Santo Tomas, the NU Bulldogs defeated the FEU Tamaraws in a single game finals taking their first UAAP men's basketball championship since the league's inception in 1938. This was the only title of NU until they won their second crown 60 years later in 2014.
