Apollonia Mathia (died 18 March 2011) was a South Sudanese journalist and social activist. Mathia was one of the founders of the Association for Media Women in South Sudan (AMWISS) as well as Union of Journalists of Southern Sudan (UJOSS).

Background and education

Mathia was born in the 1950s. [1] She spent her childhood in northern Uganda before relocating to Juba. [2] [3]

Career

Before she joined the Ministry of Finance as a secretary in 1978, Mathia worked as an Information Manager at the Catholic Church. [1] She later quit to join the Juba Post where she was the only female editor and Managing Editor. [4] She left the Juba Post in 2008 and joined the BBC Monitoring Service as their correspondent in South Sudan. [2] [4]

Mathia worked at a number of jobs and helped found the Union of Journalists of Southern Sudan (UJOSS). She also worked as a consultant at South Sudan’s World Bank Micro-finance investment department. [5]

At the time of her death in 2011, Mathia was Executive Director of the Association for Media Women in South Sudan (AMWISS) which she had helped co-found in 2008 alongside Veronica Lucy Gordon and others [3]

Death

On 18 March 2011, Mathia died as a result of an accident when a motorcycle she was on was crushed by a lorry. [1]

Equatoria is a region of southern South Sudan, along the upper reaches of the White Nile. Salva Kiir Mayardit, also known as Salva Kiir, is a South Sudanese politician who has been President of South Sudan since its independence on July 9th 2011. Prior to independence, he was President of the Government of Southern Sudan, as well as First Vice President of Sudan, from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005, following the death of John Garang.

Alfred Taban Logune was a South Sudanese broadcast journalist. He was a former BBC's correspondent in Khartoum. He was the founder and former editor in chief of the Juba Monitor, the leading independent newspaper in South Sudan, formerly known as Khartoum Monitor the 1st independent English-Language Newspaper in the Sudan. Taban was also the former Chairman of The Association for Media Development in South Sudan AMDISS. At the time of his death he was serving as the member of parliament in the South Sudan transitional legislative national assembly.

The Juba Post is an independent English-language newspaper in South Sudan. It currently has offices in both Juba and Khartoum. It is the first independent newspaper of South Sudan based in Juba, the capital of the Republic of South Sudan. The newspaper is owned by the Juba Media Company. The chairman of the board of directors is Charles Rehan Surur. In 2011 the newspaper had a circulation of 2500 biweekly issues. It is financially supported by advertising and subscription.

Nimule is a city in the southern part of South Sudan in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria. It lies approximately 197 kilometres (122 mi), by road, southeast of Juba, the capital of South Sudan and largest city in the country. The town also lies approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi), by road, north of Gulu, Uganda, the nearest large city.

Stephen Dhieu Dau South Sudanese politician

Stephen Dhieu Dau Ayik is South Sudanese politician, banker by profession, and financial technocrat. He is a proven professional and held various cabinet positions in the Government of the Republic of South Sudan. He is a senior member of Sudan’s People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and had served in various cabinet positions. Stephen Dhieu Dau was the Minister of Finance and Planning until March 2018 in the RSS. He served as Minister of Petroleum and Mining and Minister of Commerce and Industry. Stephen Dhieu Dau is from Melut County, Upper Nile State, and belongs to the Nyiel section of the Padang Dinka ethnic group.

The mass media in South Sudan is underdeveloped compared to many other countries, including fellow East African states like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Poor transportation infrastructure and entrenched poverty in the country inhibit both the circulation of newspapers, particularly in states located far from the capital of Juba, and the ability of media outlets to maintain regular coverage of the entire country.

Juba Airport is an airport serving Juba, the capital city of South Sudan. The airport is located 5 km (3 mi) northeast of the city's central business district, on the western banks of the White Nile. The city and airport are located in South Sudan's Central Equatoria State.

The South Sudan Air Force (SSAF), also previously known as the Sudan People's Air Force or Sudan People's Liberation Air Force, is the air force of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) of South Sudan. The headquarters are located in Juba Air Base, Juba.

Rebecca Joshua Okwaci is a South Sudanese politician, and the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services in the Government of the Republic of South Sudan. She is a "prolific peace campaigner and advocate of women's roles in peace", and she is a founder member of several Sudanese, South Sudanese or pan-African women's organisations, including being the Secretary-General of Women Action for Development. In December 2013, Jess Mathias of The Guardian described her to be an ideal role model for young girls over traditionally idolised women such as Rihanna and Beyoncé.

Veronica Lucy Gordon is a South Sudanese journalist, radio broadcaster and rights activist who is the co-founder of the Association of Media Women in South Sudan (AMWISS). In 2014, she became the first female executive board member of the Association for Media Development of South Sudan (AMDISS).

Anna Nimiriano is a South Sudanese journalist who is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Juba Monitor. Nimiriano is South Sudan's only female Editor-in-Chief and was the winner of the Women in News Editorial Leadership Award 2019 Africa.

Aguil Chut Deng Acouth, also known as Aguil de'Chut Deng or Aguil Chut-Deng, was a South Sudanese revolutionary and activist. She was a member of "Katiba Banat", the women's battalion of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), during the Second Sudanese Civil War.

Woja Emmanuel Wani commonly Known as Woja Emmanuel is a South Sudanese multimedia journalist specializing in gender, Health, environmental journalism, education, conflict sensitive and human rights reporting particularly on issues concerning vulnerable and destitute cluster.

Agak Achuil Lual is a South Sudanese Politician. He is the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning in South Sudan in 2022.
