Ardabil dialect is a dialect of Azerbaijani that is used by people from and around the Iranian city of Ardabil. The dialect has also been recorded in Alni, Astara, Germi, Hir, Irdemousa, Khalkhal, Kiwi, Meshginshahr, Namin, and Sareyn. [1] [2]

The speakers of Ardabili dialect are estimated to be more than one million people, most of whom live in Ardabil or its surrounding areas. [3]

Ardabili dialect in the city of Ardabil itself is also divided into three categories, which are distinguished from each other by a slight difference:

The accent of the six neighborhoods: includes the local context of the people of Ardabil city who have been living in this city since ancient times. (Gazran, Towi, Ochdekan, Pir Abdul Malik, Sarcheshme and Ali Qapo neighborhoods) [4]

Northern accent: It includes the context of Ardabil immigrants who mainly migrated to Ardabil from the northern areas of the province and settled in this city. [5]

Dialect of the surrounding neighborhoods: It includes the population structure that mainly migrated to the city from different areas of Ardabil county.

The Ardabil dialect is mostly similar to the dialect of the southern regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and during the Safavid rule in the Middle Ages, it had the greatest impact on all the Azeri dialects of the Caucasus and Azerbaijan. [6]

Linguistic grouping

Azerbaijani is one of the Turkic languages and the language of most of the Azeri regions of Iran, including Azerbaijan. This language is placed next to Istanbul Turkish and Gagauz in the western branch of the Oghuz language group. Khorasani Turkish and Turkmen form the eastern sub-branch and Qashqai language under the southern branch of the Oghuz languages. [7]

The Gilaki and Mazandarani languages share certain typological features with Caucasian languages, reflecting the history, ethnic identity, and close relatedness to the Caucasus region and Caucasian peoples of the Gilak people and Mazandarani people.

Old Azeri is the extinct Iranian language that was once spoken in the northwestern Iranian historic region of Azerbaijan before the Turkification of the region. Some linguists believe the southern Tati varieties of Iranian Azerbaijan around Takestan such as the Harzandi and Karingani dialects to be remnants of Old Azeri. Along with Tat dialects, Old Azeri is known to have strong affinities with Talysh and Zaza language and Zaza and Talysh are considered to be remnants of old Azeri. Iranologist linguist W. B Henning demonstrated that Harzandi has many common linguistic features with both Talysh and Zaza and positioned Harzandi between the Talysh and Zaza.

Afshar or Afshari is a Turkic dialect spoken in Turkey, Iran, Syria, and parts of Afghanistan by the Afshars. Ethnologue and Glottolog list it as a dialect of the South Azerbaijani language. The Encyclopædia Iranica lists it as a separate Southern Oghuz language.

The Azerbaijani people are a Turkic ethnic group of mixed ethnic origins, primarily the indigenous peoples of eastern Transcaucasia, the Medians, an ancient Iranian people, and the Oghuz Turkic tribes that began migrating to Azerbaijan in the 11th century CE. Modern Azerbaijanis are the second most numerous ethnic group among the Turkic peoples after Anatolian Turks and speak North Azerbaijani and/or South Azerbaijani. Both languages also have dialects, with 21 North Azerbaijani dialects and 11 South Azerbaijani dialects.

The Tehrani accent, or Tehrani dialect, is a dialect of Persian spoken in Tehran and the most common colloquial variant of the Western Persian. Compared to literary standard Persian, the Tehrani dialect lacks original Persian diphthongs and tends to fuse certain sounds. The Tehrani accent should not be confused with the Old Tehrani dialect, which was a Northwestern Iranian dialect, belonging to the central group.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Death of Asra Panahi</span> Iranian girl killed during the Mahsa Amini protests in 2022

On 12 October 2022, Iranian teenager Asra Panahi was killed during the Mahsa Amini protests in the city of Ardabil. She was among a group of students at Shahed Girls High School who are reported to have refused to join a pro-government demonstration and perform the "Salam Farmandeh" song. The students are reported to have been beaten by plainclothes security forces summoned to the school. Panahi died at Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil after sustaining severe injuries.
