Arfa Khanum Sherwani (born 1 November 1980) is an Indian journalist, and the senior editor of The Wire . She is an alumna of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia. She has received the Red Ink Award and the Chameli Devi Jain Award.

Biography

Arfa Khanum Sherwani was born on 1 November 1980 in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her intermediate studies in the city and obtained a B.Sc. degree from the Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. She received a diploma in journalism from the Aligarh Muslim University and completed her doctoral studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, researching on Muslim and Dalit community in India. [1]

Arfa started her career in journalism in 2000. [1] She joined The Pioneer as an intern and later worked with The Asian Age and then Sahara TV. She joined NDTV as a principal correspondent and news anchor. [2] She worked with Rajya Sabha TV until 2017 [3] and is a senior editor of The Wire . [4]

Harassment

In 2020, a 42-second clip was cut from a speech Sherwani delivered at the Aligarh Muslim University over Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and given a distorted interpretation to harass her. While talking to the Committee to Protect Journalists, she stated that she has received death and rape threats on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. [5] [6]

Sherwani was a victim of online abuse through the Bulli Bai app, which listed several prominent Muslim women on a mock auction. [7] [8]

Jamia Millia Islamia became a central university in the year 1988 by an act of the Indian Parliament which was passed on December 26, 1988.

The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards are one of the awards in India in the field of journalism. Named after Ramnath Goenka, the awards have been held annually since 2006, with the 12th edition being held in 2017. The awards are given for both print journalism as well as broadcast journalism, with a total of 25 different prizes being awarded in 2017 for excellence in journalism during 2016. In Fact Indian Express group started, Ramnath Goenka India Press Photo Award in 2004. Instituted in 2010, the award grants national recognition to journalists by a professional body.

The Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Mediaperson is an Indian journalism award named after Chameli Devi Jain, an Indian independence activist who became the first Jain woman to go to prison during India's independence struggle. The award was instituted in 1980 by The Media Foundation and is given to women in the field of journalism. According to Business Standard, the award is "perhaps India's longest running media award for women".

Najma Akhtar is an Indian academic and academic administrator. Since 12 April 2019, she has been the Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia, an Indian university and served their till 12 November 2023. She is also the first woman to hold the post in JMI.

Pamela Philipose is an Indian journalist and researcher, who is a senior fellow at the Indian Council of Social Science Research. She was the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons in 1999 and has served as an advisor to the Media Task Force of the high level committee of the Government of India. In the 2020 edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, she was appointed as one of the jurors along with the likes of B. N. Srikrishna and S. Y. Quraishi.

Rohini Mohan is an Indian journalist and writer, currently working independently. In 2019, she was the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediaperson. Her first book, The Seasons of Trouble (2014) won the Shakti Bhatt Prize in 2015, and the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award.

Uma Sudhir is an Indian journalist, who is the executive editor of the South Indian division of the television news network NDTV. Sudhir has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award and the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons.

In 2022, Indian news outlet The Wire alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) used an application, called Tek Fog, to manipulate social media. The story went viral in India, and drew reactions from opposition politicians.

Chameli Devi Jain (1928–1983) was an Indian freedom fighter, journalist, and an advocate for women's rights. She played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and later became one of India's pioneering women journalists.
