Although Arkansas State began competing in intercollegiate football in 1911, [1] the school's official record book does not generally include listings from before the 1950s, as records from before this year are often incomplete and inconsistent.

The schedule featured a nationally-televised game from Cajun Field against Oklahoma State on October 8. In five home games the average attendance at Cajun Field was 17,383, with a season-high of 25,000 attending the Oklahoma State game.

Led by fourth-year head coach Steve Roberts, the Indians finished the season with an overall record of 6–6 and a mark of 5–2 in conference play, sharing the Sun Belt title with Louisiana–Lafayette and Louisiana–Monroe. Arkansas State was invited to the New Orleans Bowl, where they lost to Southern Miss.

The Ragin' Cajuns played their home games at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana, and competed in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference. They were led by third-year head coach Billy Napier. The Cajuns began the season with an away matchup against a preseason top-25 Iowa State and concluded their regular season at conference and in-state rival Louisiana–Monroe.
