The Southern Miss Golden Eagles football program represents the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Austin Davis is an American football coach and former quarterback. Davis most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers but left the program within two months. Prior to Auburn, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks. A walk-on to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles program, Davis redshirted the 2007 season and became the starter a year later. He ended the year with a combined total of 15 school records for both game and single-season marks and led the Golden Eagles to a bowl game victory in the 2008 New Orleans Bowl. He was selected to the Freshman All-Conference USA team and earned a Freshman All-American honorable mention by College Football News for 2008. He has also been a member of the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.

The Miners finished the regular season 6–6, 3–5 in C-USA play, and were invited to the New Mexico Bowl versus BYU. While UTEP lost the matchup, 52–24, the Miners improved upon their 4–8 record from the previous season. UTEP averaged 29,350 fans per game.

Nicholas Clayton Mullens is an American football quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, where he surpassed Brett Favre's single-season school records for passing yardage (4,476) and touchdown passes (38). He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of college, and has also played in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns.
