The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Golden Eagles compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level mainly as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC). USM's newest sport of women's beach volleyball, a sport not currently sponsored by the Sun Belt, was added in the 2018–19 school year and competes in Conference USA. The school's earliest nickname was Tigers. Thereafter came such nicknames as Normalites, Yellow Jackets, Confederates, and Southerners. Golden Eagles was selected in a student/alumni vote in the early 1972. Seymour d'Campus is the name of the modern-day mascot eagle.
Avery Benjamin Dille was an American college football and college basketball player and coach and educator. He served as the head football coach at Mississippi Normal College—now known as the University of Southern Mississippi—from 1914 to 1916, compiling a record of 6–10–1. Dille was also the head basketball coach at Mississippi Normal from 1913 to 1916, tallying a mark of 29–14.

He served in that capacity for one season, compiling a record of 2–1. Slay was also the head basketball coach at Mississippi Normal in 1912–13 and from 1918 to 1920, tallying a mark of 9–7, and the school's head baseball coach from 1914 to 1916 and in 1919, tallying a mark 4–5.
Braxton Bragg "Opp" O'Mara was an American football player and coach of football and basketball. He served as a football player-coach for one season at the University of Southern Mississippi–then known as Mississippi Normal College–in 1920, compiling a record of 4–2–1. His stint as a player at Hattiesburg was sandwiched between two stints as a player at the University of Mississippi. O'Mara graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1922.
