The Army War College (AWC) is a defence service training institution of the Sri Lanka Army located in Buttala, Monaragala District, Uva Province. The AWC provids command and staff courses for mid career commissioned officers of Sri Lanka Army as well as to limited number of officers from Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and officers of various allied forces.

It was opened on 23 January 2012 as the Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC) and was renamed as the Army War College in 2021. It is affiliated to the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. [1] [2] [3] The Naval and Maritime Academy and the Sri Lanka Air Force Junior Command & Staff College conducts similar courses for mid-career officers of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force.

History

With the rapid expansion of the Sri Lankan Army with the escalation of the Sri Lankan civil war, the army saw the need to enhance command and staff training for its senior subalterns and junior field officers since it depended on friendly nations for staff college trainings which amounted to only a few slots per year. With the re-designation of the former Army Training Centre as the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) in 1981, the Officers Study Centre (OSC) was established in the SLMA to conduct the Junior Staff Course, the Senior Tactics Course and the Senior Administration Course. Aimed at mid-career officers to develop basic command and staff techniques in the British tradition, for staff officer grade III/II appointments (officers in the ranks of Lieutenant / Captain / Major). With end of the civil war, the Army established the Officer Career Development Centre in 2012 as a junior staff college with the Junior Command Course (JCC) and the Junior Staff Course (JSC) transferred to it from the OSC. OCDC initiated the Unit Command Course in 2018 and replaced it with the Senior Command Course for prospective battalion commanders in 2021. In December 2021, the OCDC was renamed as the Army War College. [4]

The DSCSC was formerly known as the Sri Lanka Army Command and Staff College (ACSC).

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a youth organisation in Sri Lanka, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, which operates in schools, and normally includes Army, Navy and Air Force sections. The corp is open for secondary school students on voluntary basis and its officers are government teachers and educational administrators, who serve as instructors. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades, as well as leadership training.

The Sri Lanka Military Academy, commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the oldest military academy in Sri Lanka, and trains commissioned officers for the Sri Lanka Army. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It has capacity to train more than 300 cadets.

The Air Force Academy (AFA) is the Sri Lanka Air Force's training and education academy which provides initial training to all SLAF personnel who are preparing to be commissioned officers. AFA also provides initial training to Officer Cadets of the general duties pilot branch. The Air Force Academy is based at SLAF China Bay in Trincomalee. The Commandant of the academy is an officer of the rank of Air Commodore.

Major General Sarath Munasinghe, was a senior Sri Lanka Army office and politician. He had served Commander Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna and following his retirement, went on to be elected as Member of Parliament of Kurunegala District and Deputy speaker and chairman of committees of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

General Shantha H.S. Kottegoda, WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army general. He was the seventeenth commander of the Sri Lankan Army from 1 July 2004 – 5 December 2005. He had served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil and Thailand. In April 2019, following the Easter Sunday bombings he was appointed as the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Defence.

General R. M. Daya Ratnayake, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP is a retired Sri Lanka Army general. He was the 20th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 2013 to 2015 and is the current Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and former Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Major General Galwaduge Janaka Laksiri Waduge, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, ndu is a retired Sri Lankan army general. He was the 10th Commander Security Forces Headquarters – Central and the former Colonel commandant of Military Intelligence Corps. He retired from active service in 2020 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 55 for Sri Lankan Armed Forces Personnel.

The Volunteer Force Training School Diyatalawa is the primary training facility for the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. Traditionally, training of the Ceylon Defence Force took place at Diyatalawa Garrison with the annual training camp becoming a regular fixture. This practice continued after the formation of the Ceylon Army in 1949, with the CDF camp been renamed as the Volunteer Force Training Centre and tasked with the training of personal of the Ceylon Volunteer Force and Ceylon Cadet Corps. In 1988, with the re-designation of the National Cadet Corps, the Volunteer Force Training Centre was restructured Volunteer Force Training School with its own Commandant.

Lieutenant General H.L.V.M. Liyanage, widely known as Vikum Liyanage, is a Sri Lanka Army General. He is the current Commander of the Sri Lanka Army serving from 1 June 2022. Prior to become the army commander, he was the 59th Chief of Staff of the Army. On 1 June 2022, Liyanage assumed as the 24th Commander of Sri Lanka Army. Earlier, he served as the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force as a Major General.
