Ars Nova Copenhagen is a Danish vocal ensemble based in Copenhagen. The ensemble specialises in the interpretation of the polyphonic choral music of the Renaissance and new vocal music.

History

Ars Nova Copenhagen was founded in 1979 by composer Bo Holten among others. [1] [2] [3] Holten was the first chief conductor of the ensemble and held the post until 1995. Tamás Vetö succeeded Holten as chief conductor in 1995 and served in the post until 2000. Paul Hillier subsequently became chief conductor of the ensemble in 2003 and stood down from the post in 2023.

In March 2024, the ensemble announced the appointment of Sofi Jeannin as its chief conductor, with immediate effect. [4] [5] Jeannin is the first female conductor to be named chief conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen.

Paul Douglas Hillier OBE is an English conductor, music director and baritone. He specializes in both early and contemporary classical music, especially that by composers Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt. He was a co-founder of the Hilliard Ensemble as well Theatre of Voices, and directed the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir for many years. He has been Chief Conductor of Ars Nova (Copenhagen) (2003-2023), and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the National Chamber Choir of Ireland since 2008.

Kaisa Roose was born in Tallinn, Estonia on 15 April 1969. At the age of six she began studying piano at the Tallinn School of Music. In 1987 she was admitted to the Tallinn Conservatoire, where she studied choir conducting, taking her degree in 1992. The following year Kaisa Roose was admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she studied orchestra conducting. She completed the postgraduate soloist course in 1997 by giving her debut concert with the Danish Odense Symphony Orchestra. The same year Kaisa Roose was awarded the Grethe Kolbe Grant for promising young conductors.

He conducted Wagner's Der Ring des Niebelungen at the National Danish Opera in 1996. From 1996 to 2000 he was chief conductor of the vocal group Ars Nova Copenhagen.
