Artaine Castle Shopping Centre (officially Tesco Artaine Castle Shopping Centre) [1] is a small shopping centre in Artane in Dublin 5, Ireland, anchored by Tesco Ireland. [1]
The centre is located at a roundabout on Kilmore Road, [2] close to the site of the former Artane Industrial School.[ citation needed ]
The area’s name is spelled Artane in modern times but Artaine [3] and Tartaine [4] were both used historically.
The centre was built by Irish property developer Rohan. [5] It was opened in autumn 1982, with Quinnsworth and Penneys as anchor stores, along with Lifestyle Sports and Leisure [2] and other shops, and a total of 44200 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 400 cars. [6] [2] The centre was the site of what was billed as "the first Banklink Service in any store in Europe" when an ATM was installed in 1986, capable of issuing vouchers which could be used for payment in the Quinnsworth branch. [7]
Artaine Castle's anchor stores include Tesco and Penneys. Other retailers include a hairdressers, pharmacy, post office and a bookshop. [8] There are just under 85,000 square feet of space, 21 shops in total, and 539 parking spaces. [9]
Quinnsworth was a supermarket chain that operated in Ireland from 1966 to 1997. During its time in operation, it grew to be one of Ireland's leading retailers, with approximately one quarter of the grocery market in the Republic of Ireland, and some 88 supermarkets across the island of Ireland, including its Crazy Prices brand operated at some of its larger outlets. It was acquired by UK chain Tesco in 1997, with its supermarkets being gradually rebranded as Tesco Ireland over the following four years.

Tesco Ireland Limited is the Irish subsidiary of supermarket group Tesco. Tesco Ireland was formed by Tesco plc's 1997 purchase of the Irish retailing operations of Associated British Foods, namely Powers' Supermarkets Limited and its subsidiaries, trading as Quinnsworth and Crazy Prices. There are 152 Tesco stores in operation in Ireland as of August 2018. Tesco had approximately 21% of the Irish grocery market in 2021 and its main competitors are Dunnes Stores and SuperValu.
Dunnes Stores is an Irish multinational retail chain that primarily sells food, clothes and household wares. It was founded by Ben Dunne in 1944. In addition to its main customer base in Ireland, the chain also has operations in Spain. The format of most of the chain's stores in Ireland involves a grocery supermarket operating alongside a clothing/textiles store, although some stores contain only textiles and some contain only a supermarket. The grocery side of the business does not operate outside of Ireland, save for a limited grocery range in the Spanish stores. The larger stores usually contain a café branded as either Café Sol or Dunnes Stores Café.

The Crescent Shopping Centre is a major shopping centre serving Limerick, Ireland. It is located in Dooradoyle, on the southern outskirts of the city. The complex in its original form was opened in 1973, making it one of the earlier shopping centres to open in Ireland.
