The Asia Culture Center,also referred to as ACC, [1] is an arts complex in Gwangju,South Korea. [2] It was opened in November 2015. It consists of five main buildings:the ACC Culture Exchange;the ACC Children;the ACC Archive &Research;the ACC Creation;and the ACC Theater. [3] The center is a member of South Korea's Ministry of Culture,Sports and Tourism(MCST).

The Gwangju Uprising,known in Korean as May 18,took place in Gwangju,South Korea,in 1980. The uprising was a response to the coup d'état of May Seventeenth that installed Chun Doo-hwan as military dictator and implemented martial law. Following his ascent to power,Chun arrested opposition leaders,closed all universities,banned political activities,and suppressed the press. The uprising was violently suppressed by the South Korean military. The uprising is also known as the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement,the Gwangju Democratization Struggle,the May 18 Democratic Uprising or the Gwangju Uprising.

The Seoul Arts Center is an arts complex in Seocho District,Seoul,South Korea. The Gwangju World Cup Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in the South Korean city of Gwangju. It is managed by the Sports Support Division of the Culture &Sports Policy Office of the Gwangju Metropolitan city. Initially the stadium was named Gwangju World Cup Stadium to host some matches of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Seungduk Kim is a curator &exhibition organizer in the field of contemporary art. She is currently working for Le Consortium in Dijon as co-director and associate curator. Seungduk Kim was selected as Commissioner of the Korean Pavilion for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. She was in charge with Franck Gautherot –for Le Consortium –of the artistic direction in Asia Culture Center in 2014 to 2016,for space design and public art programs. Kim Seung-duk was made Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of France,in July 2022.
Kimsooja was born in Daegu,South Korea. Kimsooja is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist who travels between her three homes and places of work in New York City,Paris,and Seoul. In 1980 Kim graduated with a B.F.A in Painting from Hong-Ik University,Seoul and continued to pursue her M.F.A there,obtaining the degree in 1984 at the age of 27. Her origin as a painter was a crucial starting point for the development of her art. That same year,she received a scholarship to study art at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris,France,where she studied Printmaking. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1988 at Gallery Hyundai,Seoul. Currently,her work is featured in countless international museums and galleries as well as public art fairs and other spaces. Her practice combines performance,film,photo,and site-specific installation using textile,light,and sound. Kimsooja's work investigates questions concerning the conditions of humanity,while engaging issues of aesthetics,culture,politics,and the environment. Her principle of ‘non-doing’and ‘non-making,’which follows a conceptual and structural investigation of performance through modes of mobility and immobility,inverts the notion of the artist as the predominant actor.
Defne Ayas is a curator,educator,and publisher in the field of contemporary art and its institutions. Ayas directed and advised many institutions and collaborative platforms across the world,including in China,South Korea,United States,Netherlands,Russia,Lithuania and Italy. She is known for conceiving exhibition and biennale formats within diverse geographies,in each instance composing interdisciplinary frameworks that provide historical anchoring and engagement with local conditions. Until June 2021,Ayas was the Artistic Director of 2021 Gwangju Biennale,together with Natasha Ginwala.
