Muhammad Asim Malik, HI(M) is a Pakistani three-star general and the current Director-General of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI),a position he has held since 30 September 2024. [1] [2] He is the first PhD holder to be appointed Director-General of the ISI. [3]
Malik was born to Lt. Gen. (R.) Ghulam Muhammad Malik into a Punjabi Awan family with their ancestral roots in Shahpur,a city located in the Sargodha District of the Punjab province. [4]
Malik earned his BSc (Hons) from the University of Balochistan in 1999 [5] and then studied at Fort Leavenworth in the United States,where he has written thesis on Mountain Warfare titled as the Mountain Warfare:The Need for Specialist Training. Malik also attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom. [5] Additionally,Malik obtained the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) on the US-Pakistan relations from the National Defence University. [3] He was a graduate of the Pakistan Military Academy's 80th Long Course and was the recipient of the Sword of Honour during his course. [6] [5]
Malik served as the Chief Instructor at the National Defence University in Islamabad and as an instructor at the Pakistan Command and Staff College in Quetta. [7]
Throughout his military career,he has been part of the Baloch Regiment. [7] As a major general,he led the 41st Infantry Division in Balochistan and commanded an Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. [5] He has also worked in the Military Operations Directorate. [8]
In October 2021,during his tenure as a Major General,Malik was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General and was appointed to the position of Adjutant General (AG) at GHQ,Rawalpindi by then Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Qamar Javed Bajwa. [6] [9]
In his role as AG of the Pakistan Army,Lt. Gen. Malik handled the investigation into the May 9 riots and was believed to have initiated and overseen the court martial proceedings of former Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence,Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed,who faced military trial on charges of corruption and breaches of military discipline following his retirement. [6] [5] [8]
On 23 September 2024,Malik was appointed to succeed Nadeem Anjum as the Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI),with his term beginning on 30 September 2024. [7] [10] The announcement was made by the Pakistan Television Corporation,a departure from previous practice,where such appointments were typically announced by the Prime Minister's Office or Inter-Services Public Relations. [6] [5] Although Malik has limited experience in intelligence-specific roles, [11] his appointment comes at a time of political instability,rising militancy,and heightened public attention on the ISI. Sources within military circles indicated that Malik shares a strong connection with COAS Asim Munir,who views him as a trusted confidant. [3]
The Intelligence Bureau is an intelligence and security agency in Pakistan,focused primarily on non-military intelligence. Established in 1947,the IB is Pakistan's oldest intelligence agency. It is led by the Director General,who is usually an officer from the Police Service of Pakistan.

Ghulam Muhammad Malik is a Pakistani former military officer who commanded the 10 Corps,Rawalpindi of the Pakistan Army. 10 Corps was responsible for defending the entire Line of Control between Pakistan administered Kashmir and the Indian-administered Kashmir. He retired from the army in 1995,and has since headed a charity to build hospitals and medical facilities for the poor in various parts of Pakistan. His son Asim Malik is also serving in Pak Army.

Walter Cawthorn had conceived the idea of ISI. Afterwards,Brigadier Syed Shahid Hamid took over and was later promoted to a two-star rank of a major general and became the second director-general of the ISI.
Asim Saleem BajwaHI(M) TBt is a retired Pakistani three-star general who served as the chairman of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority from November 2019 to August 2021 and the special assistant to then Prime Minister Imran Khan on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting from 28 April 2020 to 12 October 2020. On 11 December 2016,Bajwa was appointed as Inspector General Arms at GHQ,where he served until his appointment to the position of Commander Southern Command and XII Corps in September 2017. Previously,he also served as Director General of the ISPR from 2012 to 2016.

Asif GhafoorHI(M) is a retired three-star ranking general in the Pakistani Army,who most recently served as the president of the National Defence University uptill 2024. Previously,Ghafoor served as the Corps Commander Quetta and the 20th director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah is a Pakistani military officer who is currently serving as the 11th chief of the army staff of Pakistan Army since 29 November 2022. Before becoming the army chief,he was posted at the GHQ as Quartermaster general.
Faiz HameedHI(M) is a retired three-star general of the Pakistan Army,awaiting court martial. Faiz was the country's top Spy-master and served as the 29th Director General of the ISI from 2019 to 2022. He was commissioned in the Baloch Regiment having served as GOC 16th Infantry Division Pano Akil. He last served as Commander of the XXXI Corps before taking premature retirement on 10 December 2022.

Chaudhary Sarfraz Ali was a Pakistani three-star rank general who served as a Corps Commander Quetta and Commander of the Azad Kashmir Regiment until his death in a helicopter crash on 1 August 2022.
The Maliks are from the Awan tribe, hailing from Shahpur in Sargodha district, traditionally part of central Punjab's recruiting heartland for the Pakistan army.
