Asivak Koostachin

Asivak Koostachin (born 1994) is a Cree-Inuk actor from Canada, most noted for his performances in the films Red Snow and Run Woman Run . [1]

The son of filmmaker Jules Arita Koostachin, [2] he had his first major acting role in the APTN drama series AskiBoyz. [3] In 2018, he had a stage role in Theatre for Living's collective play šxʷʔa'ət (home). [4]

Red Snow, his first leading role in a feature film, was released in 2019. [5] He received a Leo Award nomination for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Motion Picture, and a nomination for Best Actor at the 2019 American Indian Film Festival. [6]

In 2021, he appeared in Run Woman Run as the ghost of Tom Longboat. [7] He received a second nomination for Best Actor at the 2021 American Indian Film Festival, [8] and won the Remi Award for Best Actor at the 2021 WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. [9] He won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2021 American Indian Film Festival for his performance in Portraits from a Fire . [8]

He has also appeared in the films Montana Story , [10] Broken Angel [11] and Angela's Shadow , [12] and has had supporting or guest roles in the television series Letterkenny , Cardinal , Hudson & Rex , and Molly of Denali .

The film explores the intergenerational impacts that the Canadian Indian residential school system has continued to have on generations of indigenous people who were not themselves students in the system, but have still been deeply scarred by it because of its effects on their parents and grandparents.

Angela's Shadow is a Canadian drama film, directed by Jules Arita Koostachin and released in 2024. Set in the 1930s, the film stars Sera-Lys McArthur as Angela, a pregnant woman who travels with her husband Henry to a remote Cree community to visit her former childhood nanny Mary ; after being threatened by a shadowy figure, she learns the truth about her own previously unknown Cree heritage, and begins to deal with the impact of Henry's racist response to the prospect that his child will not be racially "pure".
