Asmara Abigail (born 3 April 1992) is an Indonesian actress, dancer, and model who rose to prominence after starring on Joko Anwar's horror films Satan's Slaves (2017) and Impetigore (2019). She was nominated for three Citra Awards for her performances in Homecoming (2019), Yuni (2021), and Till Death Do Us Part (2024).

Career

Abigail started her career by competing on Go Girl! and Nylon teen modelling competitions. [1] She made her acting debut by starring in a short film The Wheel in 2015 as Rana, a sex worker who is exploited by her pimp. [2] In 2016, she starred in Garin Nugroho's silent film Satan Jawa in her feature acting debut. Nugroho stated that he cast Abigail on the film for her background in tango, flamenco, and pole dancing. [3] In the same year, Abigail starred in two Joko Anwar's horror short films Jenny and Don't Blink!. [4] The collaboration led her to star in Anwar's Satan's Slaves as Darminah. [5]

In 2018, Abigail starred in Malaysian action crime film One Two Jaga . [6] In 2019, Abigail starred in two other Anwar's films, Gundala and Impetigore . [7] She was picked by Variety as one of the year's Asian Stars: Up Next, along with Im Yoon-ah, Ryota Katayose, Bhumi Pednekar, Bea Alonzo, Praewa Suthampong, Jennis Oprasert, and Liên Bỉnh Phát. [8] Abigail received her first Citra Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work on Homecoming at the 2020 Indonesian Film Festival. [9] A year later, she was nominated for the same category for her work on Kamila Andini's Yuni . [10] She returned to star in the sequel Satan's Slaves 2: Communion in 2022. [11] She starred in Malaysian-Indonesian co-production Stone Turtle , which premiered at the 75th Locarno Film Festival. [12]

In 2023, she was selected to participate in Berlinale Talents. [13]

Satan's Slave is a 1980 Indonesian horror film directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra. The plot follows a wealthy family who have stopped practicing their Muslim faith and are tormented by the undead after their mother dies. It has achieved cult status among fans of Asian horror films, principally because it has been unavailable for many years, except as an obscure Japanese VHS pressing with no English subtitles. In 2006, Brentwood Home Video, a specialist US label, released an uncut print on DVD for retail release as part of its Eastern Horror series. After a hiatus during the Suharto era in the 1990s, when censorship affected production, Indonesian horror films continued being produced following Reformasi in 1998.

Satan's Slaves 2: Communion also referred to as Satan's Slaves 2 is a 2022 Indonesian supernatural horror film written and directed by Joko Anwar. It is the sequel to the 2017 film Satan's Slaves, itself based on the 1980 film Satan's Slave. It is the first Indonesian film to be released in IMAX format. Upon its release, Anwar indicated plans for a possible third installment in the series.

The 37th Citra Awards ceremony took place on 11 November 2017 at the Grand Kawanua International Convention Hall in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was hosted by comedian Denny Chandra and Puteri Indonesia 2016 titleholder Kezia Warouw. The ceremony honored the achievement in Indonesian cinema of 2017. This year, there was one new category that was awarded for the first time, Best Makeup. The ceremony was broadcast on Global TV, iNews and TVRI.

Sri Asih is a 2022 superhero film based on the Bumilangit character of the same name. The film was directed by Upi who co-wrote the screenplay with Joko Anwar. It is the second installment in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU). And it stars Pevita Pearce as Alana / Sri Asih alongside Reza Rahadian, Christine Hakim, Jefri Nichol, Dimas Anggara, and Surya Saputra.
