Astrid Schirmer (born 8 November 1942) is a German operatic soprano and an academic teacher. She sang mostly dramatic roles at major German opera houses and appeared at the Bayreuth Festival.

Career

Schirmer studied voice at the Musikhochschule Berlin with Johanna Rakow and Elisabeth Grümmer. She made her debut at the Landestheater Coburg in 1967 as Senta in Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer . She was a member of the Staatsoper Hannover, the Essen Opera and the Nationaltheater Mannheim. [1] [2]

Her roles were mostly leading roles as a dramatic soprano, such as Leonore in Beethoven's Fidelio and Wagner's Sieglinde in Die Walküre , Brünnhilde in Siegfried , and both Elisabeth and Venus in Tannhäuser . She also appeared in Verdi operas, in the title role of Aida , as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , and as Leonore in La forza del destino . She performed the title roles of Ariadne auf Naxos and Arabella by Richard Strauss, and of Puccini's Tosca and Turandot . [1] At the Staatsoper Hannover, she appeared as Miss Wingrave in Britten's Owen Wingrave , conducted by George Alexander Albrecht, with Gerhard Faulstich in the title role. [3] A versatile singer, she also appeared as Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni , Santuzza in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana , Bess in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess , and Lady Billows in Britten's Albert Herring . She also sang concerts and oratorios. [1]

Schirmer sang as a guest at major opera houses in Germany such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Oper Frankfurt, the Cologne Opera and the Stuttgart State Opera. She performed at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona and the Opernhaus Zürich. [1]

She appeared at the Bayreuth Festival, in 1977 as Ortlinde in Wagner's Die Walküre, and in 1978 in the same work in the leading part of Sieglinde. Both performances were part of the production Jahrhundertring , staged by Patrice Chéreau and conducted by Pierre Boulez. [1]

Schirmer was awarded the title Kammersängerin in Mannheim on 7 July 1981, together with Michael Davidson and Franz Mazura. [4] She has been a voice teacher at the Musikhochschule Hannover. [5] [6] Among her students was Daniel Eggert. [7]

Personal life

Schirmer is married to the conductor Carl von Pfeil; their son Alexander von Pfeil became an opera director. [6]

Marita Napier was a South African operatic soprano, known internationally as a performer of music by Strauss and Wagner. She performed in 19 productions of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. In 1989, a recording of Wagner's Die Walküre with her in a Metropolitan Opera production was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. Napier was considered one of the best Turandot, having performed the role for over 70 times including 1989 production by Franco Zeffirelli at the Met.

Linda Watson is an American dramatic soprano and academic voice teacher. She made her career based in Germany where she studied and began as a mezzo-soprano at the Theater Aachen. She has performed worldwide, including at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. She focused on dramatic roles by Wagner, including Brünnhilde and Isolde, and Strauss, including Ariadne and the Dyer's Wife. She was awarded the title Kammersängerin in Germany in 2004 and in Austria in 2020.

Hilde Scheppan was a German operatic soprano and academic teacher. She was engaged for 20 years at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and made guest appearances at the Bayreuth Festival from 1937 to 1958. She performed roles in Wagner's stage works in productions by Heinz Tietjen both in Berlin and Bayreuth. After World War II, she first continued work in Berlin, but then moved to the Staatsoper Stuttgart. She taught as a professor of voice at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg and the Musikhochschule München.

Wilma Schmidt, also known as Wilma Schmidt-Liebethal, was a German operatic soprano. She performed for five decades in leading roles at the Staatsoper Hannover, and appeared as a guest at other opera houses and the Bayreuth Festival. Her broad repertoire included the Countess in Mozart's Figaro, Agathe in Weber's Der Freischütz, Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo alongside Hans-Dieter Bader, Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhäuser, and her favourite role, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.
