Emeka Morris [1] Ogbowu [2] (born May 15, 1993), better known as Asuquomo, is a Nigerian-Canadian rapper, singer and visual artist based in Ottawa. In 2020, he won the RBC x Ottawa Arts Council's Emerging Artist of the Year Award . [3] As a performer, he has opened for international artists such as Burna Boy, WizKid, and Lido Pimienta.

Early life and education

Asuquomo was born in Nigeria, and moved to Canada to attend university [4] in 2012. [5] He is a graduate of Algonquin College, with a certificate in professional illustration and concept art from Algonquin's school of media and design.

Career

Asuquomo is known for both visual and auditory storytelling; his works have been described as having a Pan-African narrative as Afro-Fusion influences. [6] [7] [8] [9] He has been an opening act for Wizkid and Grammy-nominated Burna Boy, as well as Mdou Moctar, Shay Lia, Zaki Ibrahim, Violent Ground, Jazz Cartier, Lido Pimienta, Cadence Weapon, Kimmortal, BROCKHAMPTON, Keynes Woods, and Kodie Shane. He has played festivals including Marvest CityFolk, Ottawa RBC Bluesfest [10] and Arboretum Festival.

In 2018, he released the mixtape This That Mo. [11]

In June 2020, Asuquomo released his EP, Diobu, [12] which received support from the Ontario Arts Council. He had begun working on the EP in 2018, during an artist residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. [5] The album was well received by critics. Pitchfork described it as a project which "[exploring] themes of family, home, and the immigrant experience in his adopted city." [13] [14] The EP was featured on Exclaim!'s "Best EP's of 2020", CBC’s All in a Day, and HotNewHipHop. [15]

In September 2020, he released the music video for "Don't Be Scared." [16] Following the release, American Songwriter Magazine described the visuals as "piercing, personal, intriguing and entrancing." [17]

Mr Eazi relocated to Kumasi in 2008 and enrolled at KNUST, where he began booking artists to perform at college parties. He showed interest in music after recording a guest verse on "My Life", a song that gained traction and became a popular record at KNUST. Mr Eazi released his debut mixtape About to Blow in 2013. He gained an international audience following the release of the Efya-assisted single "Skin Tight". His second mixtape, titled Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos, was released in 2017.

Outside is the third studio album by Nigerian singer Burna Boy. It was released on January 26, 2018, through Spaceship Entertainment, Bad Habit and Atlantic Records. The album is the follow-up to his debut extended play Redemption (2016). Described by the singer as a mixtape, Outside consists mostly of Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae and road rap. It features guest vocals from English musicians J Hus, Lily Allen and Mabel. Outside was supported by six singles: "Rock Your Body", "Streets of Africa", "Koni Baje", "Sekkle Down", "Heaven's Gate" and "Ye". Its production was handled by various producers, including Juls, Leriq, P2J, Jae 5, FRED and Phantom.

Dimarjio Antonio Jenkins, better known by his stage name Houdini, was a Canadian rapper from Toronto, Ontario. He first gained recognition from his certified gold single "Late Nights" which contained vocal features from Burna Bandz and was released in 2017. This was followed by the singles "Myself" and "Backseat". He was also known for his frequent collaborations with fellow rappers Pressa, Robin Banks and NorthSideBenji, which includes the latter's certified gold single "Levels" which saw a feature from Houdini. He released his debut mixtape Hou I Am on February 13, 2019. His sophomore mixtape Hou Woulda Thought followed on August 2, 2019. His debut EP underGROUND was released on March 18, 2020. This would be his last release during his lifetime as he was shot and killed on May 26, 2020.

<i>Steel & Copper</i> 2019 EP by Burna Boy and DJDS

Steel & Copper is a collaborative EP by Nigerian singer Burna Boy and American production duo DJDS. The EP comprises 4 tracks and was released on March 21, 2019, through Spaceship Entertainment, Bad Habit, Atlantic Records and Loma Vista Recordings. It is the follow-up to Burna Boy's third studio album Outside and DJDS' fourth studio album Big Wave More Fire. Steel & Copper blends Burna Boy’s upbeat melodies with DJDS' slinky trap beats.

Etmet Musa, also known by her alias Ayo Leilani and her stage name Witch Prophet, is an Ethiopian/Eritrean musician based in Toronto, Ontario. As Witch Prophet, she has released 3 albums: The Golden Octave (2018), DNA Activation (2020), and Gateway Experience (2023). She co-founded and is the co-director of 88 Days of Fortune, a collective based in Toronto since 2009 that rebranded as Heart Lake Records in 2018. She also is a member of Above Top Secret, an electro-hip hop group. Above Top Secret has released three studio albums since 2010. DNA Activation was shortlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. In 2021, she released a new song "Leilani", which appeared on the deluxe edition of DNA Activation. The deluxe edition was released July 23, 2021. Her third album as Witch Prophet, entitled Gateway Experience, was released May 1st, 2023. The first single from the album, "Energy Vampire", was released on February 23, 2023 and featured DillanPonders. Gateway Experience was longlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.

"Hey Boy" is a song by Australian singer-songwriter Sia released on 19 November 2020, through Atlantic Records. It is taken from her album, Music – Songs from and Inspired by the Motion Picture and it follows "Together" and "Courage to Change" as the third single from the album. An alternate version of the track featuring Burna Boy was released on 14 January 2021.

Aylø, is a Nigerian neo-soul, and alternative R&B singer, songwriter, and music producer. He came into the music scene with an acclaimed mixtape album Insert Project Name, with lead track "wys?", featuring Cruel Santino. The accompanying music video for "wys?", was released on 26 May 2018, in collaboration with Samsung Nigeria, and HelaBase.

Yusuf Oluwo Gbolaga professionally known as YKB is a Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter. He debuted his first single titled “Swaggu” in 2019 and gained popularity with the hit single “San Siro”.
