The Football Association of Slovenia is the governing body of football in Slovenia. It organizes the first division, second division, third division, Slovenian Cup, Slovenian Women's League, and other competitions. It is also responsible for the Slovenia national football team and the Slovenia women's national football team. It was founded as Ljubljana Football Subassociation on 24 April 1920.
Nogometni klub Celje, commonly referred to as NK Celje or simply Celje, is a professional football club from Celje, Slovenia. They play in the Slovenian PrvaLiga. Together with Maribor, they are the only club that have participated in every season of the Slovenian PrvaLiga since its formation in 1991. Celje won their first league title in the 2019–20 season. They have also won the 2004–05 edition of the Slovenian Cup.

The 1927 National Championship was the first year in which the championship was played in a league system, with Hajduk Split being the first national league champion. Newcomer BSK Beograd replaced Jugoslavija Beograd as Serbia's top-performing club, this was due to half of the Jugoslavija players switching clubs to play for BSK. Hajduk and second-place club BSK entered the 1927 Mitropa Cup.
Rokometni klub Celje or simply RK Celje, currently named Celje Pivovarna Laško due to sponsorship reasons, is a professional handball club from Celje, Slovenia. They were the winners of the Champions League in the 2003–04 season, becoming European club champions by defeating German side SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the final. Celje play their home games at Zlatorog Arena with a capacity for 5,191 spectators.

Nogometni klub Mura, commonly referred to as NK Mura or simply Mura, was a Slovenian association football club based in Murska Sobota. The club was founded on 16 August 1924 as one of the first clubs in the Prekmurje region. The club had its golden years in the 1990s when they won the Slovenian Football Cup. During this period they were also the runners-up of the Slovenian PrvaLiga on two occasions. They played their home matches at Fazanerija City Stadium.

They were one of the most successful Slovenian clubs in the Yugoslav era, winning the Slovenian Republic League four times and the Slovenian Republic Cup twice.
Nogometno društvo Ilirija 1911 is a Slovenian football club based in Ljubljana that competes in the Slovenian Second League, the second tier of Slovenian football. The club was founded in June 1911 and is the oldest still active football club in the country.

Sport klub Ljubljana, commonly referred to as SK Ljubljana, was a Slovenian football club from Ljubljana. The club was founded in April 1936 on the basis of football section of ASK Primorje. SK Ljubljana was dissolved in 1941, when the World War II breaks up in Yugoslavia. Although the 1935–36 Yugoslav Championship was played in a cup format, by playing in the semi-finals SK Ljubljana was among the top four clubs, which is the best result ever of a Slovenian club in the Yugoslav highest level.
Akademski sportni klub Primorje, commonly referred to as ASK Primorje or simply Primorje, was a Slovenian football club from Ljubljana. The club was formed in May 1920 and was later dissolved in 1936, when its first team merged into a newly formed SK Ljubljana.
The 1920 Ljubljana Subassociation League was the first season of the Ljubljana Subassociation League. Ilirija won the league, becoming the first ever Slovenian champion. The league consisted of the Slovenian-based teams Ilirija, Slovan and I. SSK Maribor, while Rapid, Hertha and Rote Elf were German teams from Maribor, founded by the Germanic part of Maribor's population. Athletik was another German club, based in Celje.
The 1920–21 Ljubljana Subassociation League was the second season of the Ljubljana Subassociation League. The league was separated into Celje, Ljubljana and Maribor subdivisions. The final was played between the previous season winners Ilirija from Ljubljana, and Athletik from Celje. Ilirija defeated Athletik in the final and won their second title in a row.
Sportvereinigung Rapid Marburg, commonly referred to as SV Rapid Marburg or simply Rapid, was a football club from Maribor. The club was founded in 1919 by the Germans of Maribor and was the five-time runner-up of the Ljubljana Subassociation League.

The 2012 Slovenian Cup final was a football match played between Celje and Maribor on 23 May 2012 at the Stožice Stadium, Ljubljana. It was the final match of the 2011–12 Slovenian Football Cup, the 21st season of Slovenia's football knockout competition, the Slovenian Football Cup. Celje were participating in their 6th final, they had previously won one and lost four. Maribor were appearing in their tenth final, they had previously won six and lost three. This was the last final to be held at the Stožice Stadium, future finals have been held at the Bonifika Stadium in Koper.
Sportklub Rote Elf, commonly referred to as SK Rote Elf or SK Rdeča 11 in the Slovene-language newspapers, was a football club from Maribor. The club was founded in 1919 and competed in the first official season of the Slovenian football, the 1920 Ljubljana Subassociation League. It was renamed to MAK in 1921, before disbanding in 1923.
