Attack in Black was a Canadian indie rock band from Welland, Ontario, formed in 2003, whose music evolved from Hardcore punk to indie rock and folk rock.
Attack in Black began by playing hardcore punk shows and opening for bands such as Death by Stereo, Every Time I Die, Built to Spill and Billy Talent. [1] They already had a following in the Welland area, having performed in other acts prior to Attack in Black's formation.
The original band was Ian Romano (drums, percussion), his brother Daniel Romano (vocals, lead guitar), guitarist Spencer Burton, and bassist Aaron Murphy. Murphy soon quit and was replaced by another Welland-area musician Matthew Ellis, and the band recorded a self-titled EP for Grimsby, Ontario label Skate Ahead Records, which released it in 2004. [2] Ellis did not stay in the band long, and was replaced by bassist and singer Ian Kehoe, [3] who had previously been in a band with Burton. Kehoe took on the job of writing most of the lyrics for the band. Solo artist Kendra Foord played keyboards briefly, leaving shortly before they toured western Canada due to creative differences.
Closely following the lineup change, Attack in Black toured to the west coast of Canada. Upon their return, they spoke with promoter Joel Carriere, who had just founded Dine Alone Records. They were signed in early 2006; the four-song Widows EP was released September 16, 2006. [4] [5] Shortly after that, they released the EP Northern Towns. [6] That fall, they opened for Cancer Bats and Alexisonfire and, in the UK, Bayside. [7]
In early 2007, the band toured Canada with Sparta and Moneen, then headed to the UK for the Give it a Name Festival. [8] [9]
When the time came to record their first full album, they went to Chemical Sound Studios in Toronto with Ian Blurton for a two-week session (the band's first and last studio and producer experience). Dine Alone said that the record did not meet their standards and the band was sent back to the studio with local producer Dan Weston. [10]
The album, entitled Marriage , was released on July 31, 2007, coinciding with a sold-out launch show at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Three months later, the band released the self-recorded album The Curve of the Earth . [11] The album was written and recorded over two nights in Spencer Burton's sun room. It was recorded through a two-input tape machine onto an 8-track recorder. Each member of the band sang three songs on the record. It was released on vinyl and digital download only. In 2008 it was released in Germany on the Zeitstrafe label. [12]
While on tour with Ladyhawk and Shotgun Jimmie, "Fall Tour Split" was released. [13] Released on Dine Alone Records on 7" vinyl only, "Fall Tour Split" was three songs by fellow tour-mates Shotgun Jimmie and Ladyhawk. [14] [15]
In 2008, Daniel Romano and Ian Kehoe then teamed up with Constantines guitarist Steve Lambke and founded You've Changed Records. The label's first release was a record by Shotgun Jimmie called Still Jimmie. [16] It was recorded in the band's home studio and features all the members of Attack in Black as Jimmie's backup band. Attack in Black then released the EP Fake Love Songs. [17]
The band's third album Years (by One Thousand Fingertips) was released on March 10, 2009. [18] This was followed by a split LP with Baby Eagle, the solo project of Constantines guitarist Steve Lambke, released on You've Changed Records in May 2009. [19] The band members then went their separate ways, with their last show taking place on August 27, 2010 at the Mansion House in St. Catharines, ON. [20]
In March 2015, Dine Alone Records released their first EPs on vinyl, entitled The First and Second Efforts of a Band That Died Before You Could Kill Them. [21] [22] In October 2017, Dine Alone re-released Marriage. [23] And in 2018, Dine Alone released Got Live If You're Interested, and re-released (with one new song) Fake Love Songs. [24]
Romano collaborated with Frederick Squire and Julie Doiron on the folk album Daniel, Fred & Julie , released December 1, 2009. He also released a solo album, Workin' for the Music Man, [25] which was supported by a cross-Canada tour with Jason Collett. Since then, he has released at least one solo album nearly every year. [26]
Spencer Burton, who also records under the moniker Grey Kingdom, has also continuously released albums. [27] [28]

Alexisonfire is a Canadian post-hardcore band formed in St. Catharines, Ontario in 2001. The band's members are George Pettit (vocals), Dallas Green, Wade MacNeil, Chris Steele and Jordan Hastings. The band have won numerous awards, and in Canada their albums have all been certified either gold or platinum.
Julie Doiron is a Canadian singer-songwriter of Acadian heritage. She has been the bass guitarist and co-vocalist for the Canadian indie rock band Eric's Trip since its formation in 1990. She has released ten solo albums, beginning with 1996's Broken Girl, and is also the lead singer for the band Julie and the Wrong Guys.
Moneen is a Canadian indie rock band from Brampton, Ontario.
Dallas Michael John Albert Green is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter and record producer who records under the name City and Colour. He is also known for his contributions as a singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. In 2005, he debuted his first full-length album, Sometimes, which achieved platinum certification in 2006. City and Colour began performing in small intimate venues between Alexisonfire tours. The name City and Colour comes from his own name: Dallas, a city, and Green, a colour. His reasoning for the name was that he felt uneasy "putting the album out under the name Dallas Green".
Black Lungs is a side project of Alexisonfire's guitarist and vocalist, and current Gallows frontman Wade MacNeil. MacNeil created the side project similar to his first punk rock band Plan 9, a more relaxed and melodic sound than Alexisonfire.

The band has won multiple Juno Awards, including one for their album High Noon in 2015. The band headlined the 108th Grey Cup halftime show in Hamilton, Ontario on December 12, 2021.
The Brat Attack was a Canadian political punk rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2007, their biography (edited) was: "We are a political punk band that believes that we can contribute to creating social change and fighting injustice in singing about various issues that concern us, making the message the focal point, and expose people to our concerns and shit that makes us pissed off and frustrated...We are young and stupid, but believe that we should take this opportunity of singing in front of people to focus on important shit rather than the ho-hum drivel about relationships."
Years is the third studio album by Canadian folk rock band Attack in Black, released on March 10, 2009 on Dine Alone Records. The album was released both on CD and on one thousand 12" vinyl records. Singles released from the album are "Beasts" and "Liberties". The layout and photography present in both CD and vinyl versions were by Daniel Romano and Ian Kehoe.

Daniel Tavis Romano is a Canadian musician, poet and visual artist based out of his hometown of Welland, Ontario. He is primarily known as a solo artist, though he is also a member of Attack in Black and has collaborated with Julie Doiron and Frederick Squire. He has also produced and performed with City and Colour, the recording project of Dallas Green.
Adam and the Amethysts was a Canadian indie rock band formed in Montreal in 2004. The band was fronted by Adam Waito, a former member of Miracle Fortress. The band released two albums and toured mostly around North America.
The Glorious Sons are a Canadian rock band from Kingston, Ontario. Formed in 2011, the band signed with Black Box in 2013.
