Augustine Chihuri (born 10 March 1953 [1] ) is the former commissioner-general of the Zimbabwe Republic Police,having led the country's police force from 1991 to December 2017. He was named to the position in an acting on 18 December 1991,following the resignation of Henry Mukurazhizha,and was appointed substantive commissioner-general in September 1993. [2] [3] [4]
Chihuri was forced into hiding in 2018 after president Emmerson Mnangagwa took over. In May 2019 it was falsely reported that Chihuri was in Malawi helping the DPP government to rig elections. [5] On 6 December 2017,a rogue police officer attempted to set fire to Chihuri's house during a shootout at the property as a result of the offending officer attempting to steal goods from the property. [6] The fire was promptly put out by the fire brigade. [7] Since 2003,Chihuri is on the European Union and United States sanctions lists. [8]

A member of ZANU–PF and a longtime ally of former President Robert Mugabe,he held a series of cabinet portfolios and was Mugabe's Vice-President until November 2017,when he was dismissed before coming to power in a coup d'état. He secured his first full term as president in the disputed 2018 general election. Mnangagwa was re-elected in the August 2023 general election with 52.6% of the vote.

The second round of voting in the Zimbabwean presidential election of 2008 was held between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai after the first round failed to produce a 50% majority for either candidate. The election process was marred by violence against and intimidation of voters and party workers,which eventually led to the withdrawal of Tsvangirai from the poll. This left Mugabe as the winner of,effectively,a one-candidate election.

General elections were held in Zimbabwe on 29 March 2008 to elect the President and Parliament. Because of Zimbabwe's dire economic situation,the elections were expected to provide incumbent President Robert Mugabe with his toughest electoral challenge to date. Mugabe's opponents were critical of the handling of the electoral process,and the government was accused of planning to rig the election. Human Rights Watch said that the election was likely to be "deeply flawed."
The 2016–2017 Zimbabwe protests began in Zimbabwe on 6 July 2016. Thousands of Zimbabweans protested government repression,poor public services,high unemployment,widespread corruption and delays in civil servants receiving their salaries. A national strike,named "stay-away day," began on 6 July and subsequent protests took place across the country and diaspora.
In November 2017,Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe was removed as president and party leader of ZANU–PF and was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Generation 40 (G40) was a faction of the Zimbabwe African National Union –Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF). The G40 was an informal group of ZANU–PF politicians working on generation change by replacing the older officials of the party. The group promoted itself as the younger,savvy,and well educated ZANU–PF members. It was said to be led by Jonathan Moyo and ZANU–PF political commissar,Saviour Kasukuwere but fronted by Grace Mugabe,the former First Lady of Zimbabwe.
On 23 June 2018,a grenade exploded at White City Stadium in Bulawayo,Zimbabwe. The blast occurred at a ZANU–PF campaign rally,just after President Emmerson Mnangagwa had finished giving a speech. It was described as an assassination attempt against Mnangagwa,who was unharmed. The bombing resulted in at least 49 injured,including Vice-Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi,and other high-ranking government officials. Two security agents later died of their injuries.
Linda Tsungirirai Masarira is a Zimbabwean politician who served as a spokesperson for one of the smaller faction of the opposition parties in Zimbabwe,MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe.
Rikki Nathanson is a Zimbabwean transgender activist. She founded the organization Trans Research Education Advocacy and Training (TREAT) in 2015. After an arrest for entering a women's bathroom in Bulawayo in 2014,she filed a civil lawsuit for damages which she won in 2019. By that point,she had taken asylum in the US and she now lives in Maryland.
Tandabantu Godwin Matanga is a Zimbabwean police officer who serves as the current commissioner-general of the Zimbabwe Republic Police since 19 December 2017. He took office after the removal of Augustine Chihuri following the November 2017 coup d'état,and was officially appointed as commissioner-general on 12 February 2018 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He joined the police in 1982 and previously had been deputy commissioner-general since 1992.
