The Australia SailGP Team is an Australian sailing team led by Tom Slingsby which participates in SailGP. They are 3-time champions, having won the first 3 seasons since the competition was formed in 2019.

History

Australia SailGP Team was established in 2019 by F50 League LLC as a part of the inaugural season of the SailGP competition. [1] [2]

It won the league's inaugural 2019 season, [1] as well as the subsequent 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons. [3] [4] [5]

Team

The Australia SailGP Team is led by driver Tom Slingsby, who also serves as the team's chief executive officer. [3] [4] [6]

Natasha Bryant and Nina Curtis currently share the role of strategist and are part of the Women's Pathway Programme.

Wing trimmer Kyle Langford joined the team ahead of the inaugural season in 2019.

Jason Waterhouse is the team's flight controller.

Sam Newton and Kinley Fowler are the two grinders in the team.

Ed Powys serves as the reserve sailor.

Ben Durham serves as the team's coach. Ben was awarded for his efforts, winning the 2023 Australian Sailing Instructor and Coach of the Year. [7]

Giles Lyndon Scott is a British competitive sailor and four-time Finn Gold Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medallist who won the gold medal for Team GB in the Finn Class at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where having dominated the class, Scott secured his place in the history books winning the gold medal with a day to spare. In January 2024, Scott took over the Driver role of the Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team from Sir Ben Ainslie. He secured his first SailGP event win in Halifax, Canada, in June 2024 winning the inaugural ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix. Scott was Head of Sailing for Ainslie's British America's Cup Team, INEOS Britannia competing in the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona. In September 2024, Scott was announced as Driver for Canada's NorthStar SailGP Team, taking over from Phil Robertson who was at the helm for SailGP seasons 3 and 4.

Rolex SailGP Championship is an international sailing competition that features high-performance F50 foiling catamarans, where teams compete across a season of multiple grands prix (GP) around the world. The reigning champion is Diego Botín's Spain SailGP Team, which won the 2023–24 SailGP championship.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">F50 (catamaran)</span> Class of catamaran

The F50 is a one-design foiling catamaran used in the SailGP race series. The name is an abbreviation of "Foiling" and "a hull length of 50 feet". The F50s are adapted from the AC50s used in the America's Cup, with modifications including new control systems and modular wingsails. The F50s are one of the fastest racing classes in history, with a predicted top speed of 52.2 knots ; the current F50 speed record, achieved by the France SailGP Team at the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix in 2022, stands at 53.96 knots. On July 18 2024 Canada SailGP Team achieved a top speed of 55.06 knots whilst testing new T-shaped foils, to replace L-shaped foils, in San Francisco.
