The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) is a ten-day international festival focused on chamber music held in Townsville, North Queensland commencing on the last Friday in July. The AFCM also incorporates a Winterschool for emerging artists. [1] Some 30 to 40 chamber musicians from around Australia and the world converge on Townsville, each year to perform and teach emerging artists.
The festival was founded in July 1991 and has been held annually ever since. [1] In 2020 it celebrated its 30th anniversary. It is the largest festival dedicated to chamber music in the southern hemisphere. [2]
The AFCM is presented in partnership with all three levels of government as well as several commercial, tourism, regional development, and educational, organisations. [3] The festival's patron is Paul de Jersey, Governor of Queensland.
The festival was founded in 1990 for a 1991 premiere by Professor Ray Golding, the then Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University and Theodore Kuchar who continued as the artistic director for the next 16 years until 2006. The festival began conservatively focusing on the more contemporary music of the classical and romantic periods, over the first five years Kuchar started inserting works of Bartok, Bloch, Martinu, Shostakovich, expanding the musical depth for enthusiasts while maintaining the popular appeal. The festival has tried to avoid a perception that it is only there for cultivated southerners, for example in 2005 for the first time the AFCM had a presence at a Cowboys football match and in 2006 increased publicity focusing locally. [4]
In 2007 the AFCM gained a new artistic director in Piers Lane AO. Lane, an Australian, a leading international pianist who is based in London; [5] The 2007 programme involved vocalists and more variety than previous years to appeal to a broader audience, taking a "lifestyle approach" and focussing on music, wine and food. The 2017 Festival – the last under Piers Lane, was the highest box off results on record.
In 2018 Piers Lane AO. Lane. passed the Artistic Directorship to his friend and colleague, Kathryn Stott, also a leading international pianist based in Manchester; The 2018 programme & Festival was a resounding success with the second highest box office on record.
In 2022 British/German violinist, director and festival director Jack Liebeck will deliver his first program as artistic director. Located in Townsville the festival runs 29th July-7 August 2022 Incoming Artistic Director Jack Liebeck has created a truly exciting program for his first Festival. It is innovative and contemporary whilst still showcasing the classic composers and favourite works of chamber music through the centuries.

The 2023 Festival is scheduled for 28 July 2023 – 6 August 2023. [7] The Festival will once again have Jack Liebeck as the Artistic Director.

Festival attendance has reached over 17,000 in recent years, with the free concert in the park attracting close to 5,000 attendees. About 60% of the Festival audience are visitors to Townsville, mostly intrastate and interstate visitors. International guests make up 2-3% of the audience.
An important element of the festival is its education program. The AFCM Winterschool provides young emerging musicians and school students with coaching and development opportunities. Masterclasses by visiting musicians are offered as part of the Winterschool program. Each year approximately 25 tertiary level music students attend the Advanced Winterschool program. Entry to the program is by application. Entries usually open in January and close by May.
The Winterschool Director is Lloyd Van’t Hoff: Lauded by Limelight Magazine for his "life-affirming music-making", Lloyd Van’t Hoff enjoys a career as a vibrant young clarinettist, chamber musician, collaborator and educator. Having been crowned the 2015 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year, Lloyd regularly performs as a concerto soloist and tutti player with many of Australia’s symphony orchestras and as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals and venues around Australia and the globe.
Each year the Festival has a "day-off" during which festival patrons have an opportunity to hear chamber music but in more unusual settings.
The Orpheus Island Cruise has been one of the highlights for festival patrons. En route to Orpheus Island, whales have been often cited in the waters around the Palm Island group. Upon arrival at the remote end of Orpheus Island, patrons can enjoy the secluded beach and adjacent national park before settling down for a short performance from festival artists. The first tour to Orpheus Island took place in 2013 and was repeated in 2016 and each year since.
From 2002 to 2010, the Outback Tour brought some of the best music in the world to some of the most isolated places in the world. In 2006 enthusiastic music lovers, join six musicians (including didgeridoo player William Barton) in a five-day tour of Outback Australia, visiting Cloncurry, Ernest Henry Mine, Mount Isa, Normanton and Karumba focusing on fine food and music and masterclasses with hands on experience of the Queensland mining industry and communities. Works included; Peter Sculthorpe – String Quartet No. 9; Philip Glass – String Quartet No. 2 Company; Hardin (aka Moondog) – Synchrony No. 2; Lee – Morango – Like a Tango; Barton – Sacred Song and Hindson – Technologic. Julian Armour, is a Canadian cellist and artistic director. Armour is married to violist Guylaine Lemaire. He is the son of the philosopher Leslie Armour.
Musica Viva was founded in 1945 by Romanian-born violinist Richard Goldner, with the aim of bringing chamber music to Australia. The co-founder was a German-born musicologist, Walter Dullo. At its inception, Musica Viva was a string ensemble performing chamber music to small groups of European immigrants. By 2013, Musica Viva had become one of the largest chamber music presenters in the world.
The Tuckamore Festival is a chamber music festival in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. It is traditionally held annually in August for two weeks. The festival was co-founded in 2001 by violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves, classical musicians who perform together as Duo Concertante. Dahn and Steeves are the current artistic directors of the festival. This year's festival will be held online from August 8–21, 2022.
Ólavur Jakobsen, classical guitarist. Studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen with Ingolf Olsen and received his masters diploma exam in 1995. Further studies in Paris with French guitarist Roland Dyens. Has participated in masterclasses with e.g. Sir Julian Bream and David Russell.
Piers Lane is an Australian classical pianist. His performance career has taken him to more than 40 countries. His concerto repertoire exceeds 75 works.

The Kronberg Academy is an academy of chamber music based in Kronberg, Hesse, Germany. It was founded in 1993 by Raimund Trenkler, who has served since then as its chairman and artistic director. The academy's initial focus was on the cello and supporting young cellists, but it now trains and sponsors gifted young players of the violin, viola, and cello, and organizes a diverse range of musical projects and concerts, including an international festival of strings. It was granted charitable status in 2004.
The Bowdoin International Music Festival is an annual summer music school and concert series that takes place in Brunswick, Maine. Founded in 1964 as a program of Bowdoin College, it has operated as an independent nonprofit organization since 1997.
The conductorless orchestra, sometimes referred to as a self-conducted orchestra or unconducted orchestra, is an instrumental ensemble that functions as an orchestra but is not led or directed by a conductor. Most conductorless orchestras are smaller in size, and generally perform chamber orchestra repertoire. Several conductorless orchestras are made up of only strings and focus primarily on string orchestra repertoire. Conductorless orchestras generally come from the classical music tradition and perform standard repertoire, but many conductorless orchestras promote or specialise in contemporary classical music repertoire. Many contemporary classical music ensembles also regularly perform without a conductor.

John McAll is a pianist, composer, arranger and producer with experience ranging from jazz, pop, blues, rock contemporary classical, afrobeat and theatre.
Theodore Kuchar is a Ukrainian American conductor of classical music and a violist.
Jack Liebeck is a British–German violinist. In 2010, he won a Classical Brit in the young British classical performer category. He was soloist on the score for the 2011 film Jane Eyre, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and also on the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated soundtrack for Anna Karenina (2012). Both scores were composed by Dario Marianelli. He records exclusively for Hyperion Records.
The Orpheus Sinfonia is an orchestra based in London. Established in 2009, it is formed of recent music conservatoire graduates and provides experience and support for young musicians develop their professional careers. It is under the artistic direction of international cellist and conductor Thomas Carroll.
The Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy (WSMF) is a four-week-long event held at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The event has been held yearly since 1995. It is produced by its parent organization, Wintergreen Music. WSMF includes performances by the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, which performs public concerts each Saturday and Sunday of the four weeks in the Dunnlop Pavilion
Benjamin Northey is an Australian conductor, musician and arranger. He has been Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand, since 2015. He is also the Principal Conductor in Residence of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2020. He was previously the Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 2010-2019.
The Chicago Philharmonic is an American orchestra based in Chicago, Illinois, governed by the Chicago Philharmonic Society. Founded in 1988 by principals of the Lyric Opera Orchestra of Chicago, it is a musician-governed, non-profit organization consisting of nearly 200 classical music performers from the Chicago area. Since 2013, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor has been Scott Speck.
