Avalon no Kagi [1] , alternatively known as The Key of Avalon is an arcade game developed by Hitmaker and published by Sega on the Triforce arcade board. It is the third card arcade game by Sega, following World Club Champion Football and Mushiking: The King of Beetles . [2] It is a combination of sugoroku style board game and combat trading card game. It was followed by a sequel called The Key of Avalon 2: Eutaxy Commandment which was updated as The Key of Avalon 2.5: War of the Key. [3] [4] [5]
It was often compared to Culdcept , [6] and is able to be played by multiple players at once, using a free in and free out method where other players can drop in and drop out of a match at any time. The cabinet reads a deck of up to 30 cards. [7]
The game is a board game with 4 players, and two roles, divided into one key holder and three chasers. Inserting the deck and the card that saves the players progress, start the game. The key holder has to besiege the towers and open the main castle with his key to win the game. The chasers have to bump into the key holder, and after a battle, transfer the key and reverse the roles. The three chasers and the key holder take turns, with all the three chasers moving at once. Using monster cards makes the character move on the board. From the deck of 30 cards, six cards are allowed to be used in each turn. The cards have attack, defense and movement values and are also categorized in four colors and rarity values. In addition to monster cards, there also support cards for either the monsters or the character. The attack value of the monster card needs to be greater than the defense value to win the battle. Passing certain checkpoints and winning battles increases life points. The life points decrease after each turn. [8] [9] [10]
In total, after all the updates, the game had 295 different cards. [6]
Initially the development team had a hard time conveying the game to arcade owners, as in initial showing at trade shows focused on purely on the cards. Focusing on the board game aspect made it more appealing to arcade owners. The game's customer base was different than many arcade games, as the art on the cards appealed to females and doujinshi artists. [11]
Avalon no Kagi was one of Sega's most successful arcade games in 2003, mentioned alongside Dragon Treasure as a "new product" securing high sales in their financial report. [12] The game balance was initially poor although improved in later versions. Its popularity decreased after Quest of D and Sangokushi Taisen appeared, which had online features that Avalon no Kagi lacked. [13] Instead of adding online support, it was ported to PC through a licensing agreement with Gamespot, [14] but was negatively received [15] and shut down two years after its 2010 launch. [6]

Sega AM Research & Development No. 3, known as Hitmaker Co., Ltd. from 2000 to 2004, is a defunct division of Sega, a Japanese video game company. Established by 1993, AM3 was managed by Hisao Oguchi and developed a number of arcade games for Sega. Series introduced by AM3 include Virtual On, Sega Rally, Crazy Taxi, and Virtua Tennis. AM3's main focus was on arcade games until the release of the Dreamcast. Additionally, developers Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Kenji Sasaki developed Sega Rally Championship with AM3 before departing to form AM Annex, which later split into Sega AM9 and Sega AM5.
Derby Owners Club is a horse racing arcade game developed by Sega AM3, known as Hitmaker at the time, and published by Sega. Players are put into the roles of breeder, trainer, jockey, and owner of a thoroughbred racehorse. Statistics are saved on a IC card that can be put into any machine. The first version was released in Japan in 1999 and ran on the NAOMI arcade board.
World Club Champion Football is a Japanese collectible card game and football/soccer sports arcade video game released by Sega. The game is officially abbreviated as WCCF. It is the first arcade game to combine trading cards with a video game, establishing a new genre of arcade game. The game was mostly released in Japan and has never received a port.
Love and Berry: Dress Up and Dance! is an arcade game and collectible card game from Sega, targeted toward girls. The game was first shown in amusement arcades on October 30, 2004, and became very popular among the target market in late 2005 through 2006. Game machines were installed in many department stores and children's play areas. Players receive 1 card at the start of the game with barcodes on them that stores information for new outfits, accessories, and hairstyles for the game characters. As of April 2006, there are 180 different collectible cards. As of January 2006, approximately 6,800 machines have been installed, and 104 million cards printed. It is the fourth trading card arcade game by Sega, following World Club Champion Football, Mushiking: The King of Beetles and The Key of Avalon.
A.B. Cop is a futuristic 3D racing arcade game released by Sega in 1990. It never received any official port to home consoles.

It is a real-time strategy-based game set in the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history and the 14th century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. It uses the same housing as World Club Champion Football, with a sensitive playing area that can detect the position of the physical cards. Over 500 million trading cards have been shipped. It is the sixth trading card arcade game by Sega, following World Club Champion Football, Mushiking: The King of Beetles, The Key of Avalon, Love and Berry: Dress Up and Dance! and Quest of D.
Madō Monogatari, known in the west as Sorcery Saga, is a series of first-person dungeon crawler role-playing video games by Compile. The first game was released in 1990 for MSX2. Sega published the Game Gear remakes based on 1-2-3. The characters of this series would later be used in the puzzle game Puyo Puyo.
Mie Kumagai is a Japanese video game producer. She began working at Sega in 1993 as an amusement park attraction planner and transferred to the arcade division of its AM3 studio two years later. When this studio's boss, Hisao Oguchi, was promoted to president of the whole company in 2003, Kumagai became the new AM3 head and the first ever female president within Sega's development structure or any Japanese development studio. She produced a number of arcade titles before helming Sega's successful Virtua Tennis series for arcades and home consoles. As of 2015, Kumagai is an executive producer at the mobile game company Colopl.
Hisao Oguchi is a Japanese business executive. He was director, vice chairman, and chief creative officer of Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. Oguchi originally was President and CEO of Sega. He was president and CEO of Sega Sammy Creation. He is currently a director of UDream, a content production company.

Madō Monogatari I is a role-playing video game for the Mega Drive that was the last official Sega Mega Drive game released in Japan. The game is part of the long-running Madō Monogatari series.
Sega Sports Research and Development, or Sega Sports R&D, was a development division of the Japanese video game company Sega. It was previously known as Smilebit, one of nine semi-autonomous studios which Sega established in 2000. Smilebit was previously known as R&D6 or AM6 which itself was mainly based on Sega PC. Smilebit was known for its sports simulation titles, as well as Jet Set Radio. When Sega started releasing games for other platforms, Smilebit began developing games for the Xbox, with Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta and GunValkyrie. Smilebit was led by Shun Arai as president and Takayuki Kawagoe as director. Kawagoe became president of Smilebit in 2003.

Dragon Treasure is an arcade game developed by Overworks and published by Sega in 2003 for the Sega NAOMI arcade board for Japanese arcades. The game is a coin-pusher game combined with a role-playing game, and can be played by multiple people. Progress can be stored on an IC card and can be resumed on any machine, which was new for medal games in Japan at the time. It received two sequels with Dragon Treasure II in 2004 and Dragon Treasure III in 2005.
Sega Net Mahjong MJ is a mahjong arcade game developed by Sega AM2 and released by Sega. The first version for arcades was released in July 2002 for the Sega NAOMI 2 arcade system. It featured online features with ranking, customization and recording your play history, using the experience that AM2 had developed from Virtua Fighter 4 and VF.NET. It received numerous updates and sequels since then.
Quest of D is an arcade game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega on the Chihiro arcade board. It is the fifth trading card arcade game by Sega, following World Club Champion Football, Mushiking: The King of Beetles, The Key of Avalon and Love and Berry: Dress Up and Dance!. It is an action-role playing game in a dark fantasy setting and is online enabled similar to previous AM2 titles Virtua Fighter 4 and Sega Network Taisen Mahjong MJ.
Shining Force Cross is an action role-playing game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega on the Sega RingEdge arcade platform. It is part of the Shining series from Sega. It is developed by the same development team as Quest of D. It was only released in Japan in arcades and received no port of any kind.
