The Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation is the main domestic security agency of the Russian Federation and the main successor agency of the Soviet KGB. Its main responsibilities are counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance. On March 11, 2003 Russian president Vladimir Putin changed the status of the Border Guard Service from an independent service into a branch of the Federal Security Service.

The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation is the principal security agency of Russia and the main successor agency to the Soviet Union's KGB; its immediate predecessor was the Federal Counterintelligence Service (FSK) which was reorganized into the FSB in 1995. The three major structural successor components of the former KGB that remain administratively independent of the FSB are the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), the Federal Protective Service (FSO), and the Main Directorate of Special Programs of the President of the Russian Federation (GUSP).
There were a succession of Soviet secret police agencies over time. The first secret police after the October Revolution, created by Vladimir Lenin's decree on December 20, 1917, was called "Cheka" (ЧК). The Federal Protective Service, or the Federal Guard Service of the Russian Federation, official name in English Federal Guard Service of the Russian Federation, is a federal government agency concerned with the tasks related to the protection of several high-ranking state officials, mandated by the relevant law, including the President of Russia, as well as certain federal properties. FAPSI or Federal Agency of Government Communications and Information (FAGCI) was a Russian government agency, which was responsible for signal intelligence and security of governmental communications.
The System for Operative Investigative Activities is the technical specification for lawful interception interfaces of telecommunications and telephone networks operating in Russia. The current form of the specification enables the targeted surveillance of both telephone and Internet communications. Initially implemented in 1995 to allow access to surveillance data for the FSB, in subsequent years the access has been widened to other law enforcement agencies.

The Central Band of the Border Guard Service of the Federal Security Service of Russia, also known as the Russian Frontier Guard Band is a special military unit that is the official flagship military band for the Border Service of the FSB of Russia. The band is a branch of the Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of Russia and is one of the leading music ensembles in the Russian Federation. Yevgeny Alekseyevich Murov is a Russian politician and government agent who had served as the leader of the Russian special services, and director of the Federal Protective Service of Russia from 2000 to 2016. He is a General of the Army as of 12 June 2004.
