West Papua, formerly Irian Jaya Barat, is a province of Indonesia. It covers the two western peninsulas of the island of New Guinea, the Bird's Head Peninsula and the Bomberai Peninsula, along with nearby islands. The province is bordered to the north by the Pacific Ocean, to the west by the Halmahera Sea and the Ceram Sea, to the south by the Banda Sea, and to the east by the province of Central Papua and the Cenderawasih Bay. Manokwari is the province's capital and largest city. West Papua is the fourth-least populous province in Indonesia, with a population of 1,134,068 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate for mid 2021 was 1,156,840.

Domine Eduard Osok Airport is an airport in Sorong, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. It is one of the largest and busiest airports on the Bird's Head Peninsula. It replaced a smaller, former World War II airfield, Jefman Airport on the island of Jefman. The airport is named after Domine Eduard Osok, a pastor originating from Sorong and known for doing missionary works and spreading Christianity in Sorong and the surrounding parts.
Sorong Regency is a regency of Southwest Papua province of Indonesia. It covers an area of 13,075.28 km2, and had a population of 70,619 at the 2010 Census, and 118,679 at the 2020 Census. Its administrative centre is the town of Aimas. Sorong Regency surrounds Sorong City (Kota), which is independent of the Regency; Sorong City has an airport, Sorong Airport, which also serves the Regency.
Xpress Air was a domestic regular airline that offered direct flights to the eastern parts of Indonesia, with its first flight in 2005, and from 2014 international routes to Malaysia. Merpati Nusantara Airlines Flight 836 was a scheduled domestic flight between Sorong and Manokwari, Indonesia. On 13 April 2010, the flight, operated by Boeing 737-300 PK-MDE, overran the runway on landing. The aircraft broke into three pieces. All people on board survived, although 44 suffered injuries.

Marinda Airport, also known as Raja Ampat Airport, is an airport serving Waisai, Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. The airport serves as one of the main port of entry to the Raja Ampat Islands, which contains the richest marine biodiversity on earth, other than the larger Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong. Marinda Airport was inaugurated on 9 May 2012 by former Minister of Transport E. E. Mangindaan. The airport was built due to the rapid increase of tourism coming to Raja Ampat Islands and the remoteness of the surrounding area, which was very difficult to access before. Currently, the airport can only accommodate small aircraft such as the ATR-72.

The Draft Law (RUU) on the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province has been passed into law and becomes the 38th province in Indonesia.
