Urmia is the largest city in West Azerbaijan Province of Iran. In the Central District of Urmia County, it is capital of the province, the county, and the district. The city is situated near the borders of Iran with Turkey and Iraq.

Foluke Atinuke Gunderson is an indoor volleyball player who plays as a middle blocker for Japanese club Hisamitsu Springs. Born in Canada, she represents the United States internationally. Gunderson won gold with the national team at the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix, 2014 World Championship, the Rimini Volleyball Nations League, and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, silver at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Her 2020 Olympics win allowed her to complete the trifecta of winning an Olympic bronze, silver, and gold medal.
The FIVB World Grand Prix 2006 was the fourteenth edition of the annual women's volleyball tournament, which is the female equivalent of the Men's Volleyball World League.

It has also hosted the first European Games and 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games.

Nootsara Tomkom is a Thai volleyball player who plays for the San Diego Mojo of the Pro Volleyball Federation. Widely regarded as one of the best setters in international volleyball, Tomkom has been selected to play for the Thailand women's national volleyball team over 50 times.

He is of Iranian Azerbaijani descent. Arash Keshavarzi has been a member of the national volleyball team in 2013, 2014 and 2015 World League.
Nikolay Jeliazkov or Zheliazkov is a former Bulgarian male volleyball player and coach. He was part of the Bulgaria men's national volleyball team at the 1994 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship and 1996 Summer Olympics. After his retirement he became a volleyball coach. He was coach of Bulgaria men's national volleyball team at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
