Current and historical relationships exists between Azerbaijan and Djibouti. Neither country has a resident ambassador. Both countries are members of the Non Aligned Movement.

History

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Djibouti were established on 22 October 1996. [1] The relations between two countries have been further strengthened after 2016. The Republic of Djibouti fully respects sovereignty and internationally recognized territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2017 parliamentary delegation headed by speaker of Djibouti parliament made a trip to Azerbaijan to attend the international forum on intercultural dialogue. [2]

Inter-parliamentary ties

On 14 April 2017 the Parliament of Republic of Azerbaijan adopted a decision on establishment of a working group on inter-parliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and Djibouti. Vusal Huseynov - member of the Azerbaijani Parliament is the chair of the working group.[ citation needed ]

On 3 May 2017 the speaker of Azerbaijan's Parliament Ogtay Asadov received the delegation led by President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Djibouti Mohamed Ali Houmed. [3]

Partnership in humanitarian action

On 10 April 2017 a plane carrying humanitarian aid was sent from Baku to Djibouti. The humanitarian aid was sent by the Ministry of Emergency Situations according to the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. [4] The aid included drinking water, sugar, tea, sunflower oil, corn oil, flour, macaroni, vermicelli, etc. [5]

Partnership in civil aviation

On 30 November 2016, during the visit of President of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC to the Republic of Djibouti a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Azerbaijan Airlines and Djibouti airlines to expand cooperation. Moreover, an agreement was reached to open Baku-Djibouti cargo transportation flight, as well as to establish Azerbaijan-Djibouti joint cargo transportation company. [6]

Recognition of Khojaly Massacre

In January, 2017 the National Assembly of the Republic of Djibouti adopted a resolution which recognized the Khojaly Massacre as acts of genocide and crimes against humanity. The resolution also touches upon the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia. [7]

Azerbaijan–Canada relations Bilateral diplomatic relations

Bilateral relations exist between Azerbaijan and Canada. Both nations are members of the United Nations.

Azerbaijan–Denmark relations Bilateral diplomatic relations

Bilateral relations exist between Azerbaijan and Denmark. Azerbaijan's non resident embassy for Denmark is located in London, United Kingdom. Denmark has a consulate in Baku. Denmark recognized the Independence of Azerbaijan on 31 December 1991. On 2 April 1992 the diplomatic relations between the two countries were established. Bilateral relations between the two countries are described as "friendly" and "cooperative".

Armenia–Cyprus relations Bilateral diplomatic relations

Foreign relations have reportedly always been strong between Armenia and Cyprus. Cyprus has been a supporter of Armenia in its struggle for the recognition of the Armenian genocide, economic stability and the resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In return Armenia has been advocating a stable Cyprus after the Turkish invasion in 1974 and supporting a lasting solution to the Cyprus dispute.

Azay Guliyev

Azay Guliyev is the Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Chair of the Silk Road Support Group of the OSCE PA, Coordinator of the Baku Parliamentary Platform for Dialogue and Cooperation, Head of Delegation of Azerbaijan to the OSCE PA and the Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Khojaly massacre is currently recognized and commemorated by parliamentary acts adopted in fifteen countries and in twenty-three states of the United States of America.

In 1991, Azerbaijan joined the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and started to build relations with the organization. As a result, the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Saudi Arabia was given a mandate of permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the General Secretariat of the OIC in May 1994.
