Azerbaijan and Organization for Economic Co-operation

The Organization for Economic Co-operation is an intergovernmental organization established in 1985 with cooperation of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. The crucial goal of this organization is to achieve sustainable economic development, promote trade, integrate to the world economy and develop efficient transport system. Azerbaijan joined the organization in 1992. From August 2012 till 2016, the Secretary General of ECO is a representative from Azerbaijan. [1]

History

First, Regional Cooperation for Development was found in 1964 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey. In 1985 it was renamed as “ECO”. After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1992, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan joined the organization. Altogether the states formed one of the biggest regional blocks in Asia. ECO member have been cooperating to accelerate regional development. [2]

Cooperation with Azerbaijan

The Republic of Azerbaijan participates in the process of liberalization of economy within OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation). Azerbaijan signed agreements such as “Framework Agreement on Trade Cooperation among ECO member states”, “Agreement on Transit Transport in the ECO Region”, “Agreement on Promotion and Protection of Investment in the ECO Region”. The purpose of these agreements is to strengthen economic cooperation among member states and development of internal trade. During the 21st meeting of Council of Ministers, the decision about foundation of ECO Research Center in Baku was approved.

In 2013 the Gazvin – Rasht – Astara Iran – Astara Azerbaijan railway project was convened. In 2013 and 2014 the first and second Baku forms of ECO member states were held. Economic intellectuals came together and discussed issues of economic growth and cooperation. [3]

Azerbaijan proposed a new strategy for energy cooperation. Now together with its partners, Azerbaijan is realizing Southern Gas Corridor project that costs 40 billion dollars. The project will create thousands of new jobs in the region and strengthen friendship and cooperation among member states. [4]

Meetings held in Azerbaijan

In 2012 on May 2 and 3 AZPROMO organized the second meeting of the leaders of the Trade Promotion Organizations of the ECO member states in Baku. The seventh meeting on July 16–17 in 2012 was also held in Baku. 9th summit of ECO was held in Baku. On October 16, 2012 Baku hosted the 12th ECO Summit. A 2-year chairmanship was passed to Azerbaijan. In 2017 the 3rd meeting of leaders of anti-corruption organizations and ombudspersons of ECO was held in Baku.

During the summit, Ilham Aliyev made a speech: “We are collaborators and the organizers of several international and regional projects and we want to increase the number of concrete projects within the Economic Cooperation Organization very much. We have to address the research issues to the concrete and take all measures necessary for the strides process ..." Also, Aliyev noted that he paid great attention to the successful operation of ECO. Also he noted that the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and other ECO counties has increased by more than 20% from 2011 (in 2011 turnover was 28%) to 2012. After summit, special issue of ECO journal “ECO Chronicle” was published which was dedicated to the Republic of Azerbaijan. It included articles about Heydar Aliyev, major points from the speech of Ilham Aliyev during the 11th Summit of ECO and the speech of Elmar Mammadyarov during the 19th meeting of Ministerial Council of ECO, oil strategy and development of tourism in Azerbaijan. The Economic Cooperation Organization or ECO is an Asian political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985 in Tehran by the leaders of Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey. Foreign relations exist between Azerbaijan and Switzerland. Azerbaijan has an embassy in Bern as does Switzerland in Baku. Both countries are full members of the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Strong foreign relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom. The Embassy of United Kingdom in Baku opened in 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in London opened in 1994. Both countries are members of the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

Foreign relations exist between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan has an embassy in Nur-Sultan and a consulate in Aktau. Kazakhstan has an embassy in Baku.

Azerbaijan–Pakistan relations Bilateral relations

Foreign relations exist between Azerbaijan and Pakistan. Pakistan has an embassy in Baku and Azerbaijan has an embassy in Islamabad. Bilateral Relations of Azerbaijan and Pakistan are based on Perceptive Process and Cognitive Functions and Perceptive linkages between both countries that are enhancing and consolidating contact between Baku and Islamabad. The two nations are considered "strategic partners". and Azerbaijan Pakistan security cooperation enhancing in all field of the military to military relations and also among security agencies.

Bilateral relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Japan in the political, socio-economic, cultural, and other fields.

Organization of Turkic States Eurasian intergovernmental organization

The Organization of Turkic States, formerly called the Turkic Council or the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States, is an international organization comprising prominent independent Turkic countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. It is an intergovernmental organization whose overarching aim is promoting comprehensive cooperation among Turkic-speaking states. First proposed by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2006, it was founded on October 3, 2009, in Nakhchivan.

The 2012 ECO summit was the twelfth Economic Cooperation Organization summit, held on 16 October 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan–China relations Bilateral relations

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China were established on April 2, 1992. The relations between the two countries have developed smoothly and high-level exchanges have been close. The PRC embassy in Baku openly commends Azerbaijan for supporting its stance on the political status of Taiwan, Tibet's sovereignty, the conflict in Xinjiang, and the suppression of Falun Gong. All political forces have actively advocated strengthening friendly cooperation with China. China was one of the first countries to recognize independence. President Aliyev came to China in August 2008 and May 2014 to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and the fourth summit of the Asia Cooperation and Confidence Measures Conference. In March 2005 and December 2015, he twice went to China for state affairs. access. In June 2018, the President of the National Assembly, Assador, visited China. In 1991, Azerbaijan joined the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and started to build relations with the organization. As a result, the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Saudi Arabia was given a mandate of permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the General Secretariat of the OIC in May 1994.

GUAM was created to help participants to use mutual cooperation to become closer to European Union and NATO. GUAM countries were bound by a desire to prevent Russian expansionism in the region. Azerbaijan has a strategic role in the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development. Expanding the links with international organizations and individual countries is in the interest of Azerbaijan.

The relationship between Azerbaijan and Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation dates back to 1992 when Azerbaijan signed Istanbul Summit Declaration and the Bosphorus Statement.

Azerbaijan–Portugal relations Bilateral relations

The diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Portugal established in 1992 after Portugal recognized the independence of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan–Turkic Council relations

Relations between Turkic Council and Azerbaijan started from the year of 2009 until present. Taking into account of the establishment date of the organization, Azerbaijan continues relations as a member of the founding country.

Azerbaijan–Saudi Arabia relations Bilateral relations

Bilateral relationships and interactions exist between these two countries. These relations include diplomatic, cultural, economic and other related areas.

The 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement was held October 25–26, 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The summit was attended by the delegation from more than 120 countries.
