Azhagam Perumal is an Indian film director and actor, who works in Tamil film Industry. [2]
Azhagam Perumal hails from the village of Kulasekharapuram in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. [3] All his family members were working in the government service and his parents wanted him to be an engineer. Azhagam Perumal, however, after his graduation, applied to the Adyar Film Institute in spite of stiff opposition from his family. He graduated with a Gold Medal from the Institute in 1991. [3] [4]
Azhagam Perumal worked as an assistant to director Mani Ratnam from Thalapathi to Iruvar , before leaving to make his independent project. [5] When Mani Ratnam was shooting Alaipayuthey , he was looking for someone like Jagathy Sreekumar to play the quirky house owner, which Azhagam Perumal eventually did, making his acting debut. [5]
He had initially announced his directorial debut in 1998 as Mudhal Mudhalaaga, a romantic film starring Arvind Swamy and Karisma Kapoor. Despite beginning production, the film was indefinitely put on hold. He then started making Udhaya in 1999 with Vijay and Simran starring, but the film faced production delays owing to the producer's financial problems. Azhagam Perumal also discussed making a film titled Hijack in 2000 but the film failed to develop. He later attempted to make the film with Vikram in 2004, but the project did not proceed. His directorial debut was eventually the romantic comedy Dumm Dumm Dumm starring R. Madhavan and Jyothika, in which his mentor Mani Ratnam worked as the screenwriter and producer. The film released in 2001 and was a success. [5] After Alaipayuthey, he was offered acting offers but he declined as he wanted to revive and complete Udhaya by early 2004.
He mostly known for his performances in Pudhupettai (2006), 7aum Arivu (2011) and Naanum Rowdydhaan (2016). [9] He is also in supporting roles in Jayam Ravi movies in Adanga Maru (2019), Iraivan (2023) and Siren (2024). [10] [11] [12]

Gopalaratnam Subramaniam, known professionally as Mani Ratnam, is an Indian film director, film producer and screenwriter who predominantly works in Tamil cinema and a few Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films.
Arvind Swamy is an Indian actor, film director and entrepreneur known for his work in Tamil cinema and a few Hindi cinema, Telugu cinema and Malayalam cinema. He was introduced as an actor by Mani Ratnam with the blockbuster film Thalapathi (1991) and subsequently starred in successful films such as Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Minsara Kanavu (1997), Thani Oruvan (2015), and Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018). He made his debut as a director in the Netflix anthology series Navarasa (2021) in which his segment was named Rowthiram . He is a recipient of three Filmfare Award South, one Tamil Nadu State Film Award and two SIIMA Awards.
Ranganathan Madhavan is an Indian actor, screenwriter, film producer and film director who predominantly works in Tamil and Hindi cinema. Alai Payuthey, also spelt Alaipayuthey, is a 2000 Indian Tamil-language romantic musical film co-written, co-produced and directed by Mani Ratnam, starring R. Madhavan and Shalini. The film explores the tensions of married life between two young people who elope and the maturing of love among urban Indians who are conflicted between tradition and modernity. The score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman.
Kannathil Muthamittal is a 2002 Indian Tamil-language musical war film written, produced and directed by Mani Ratnam. It was based on a short story, "Amuthavum Avanum" by Sujatha. The film stars R. Madhavan, Simran and P. S. Keerthana with Nandita Das, J. D. Chakravarthy, Prakash Raj and Pasupathy portraying other pivotal characters. The film's score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman, while Ravi K. Chandran handled the cinematography. Mani Ratnam presents the story of a child of Sri Lankan Tamil parentage adopted by Indian parents, whose desire is to meet her biological mother in the midst of the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was released on 14 February 2002.
Aayutha Ezhuthu is a 2004 Indian Tamil-language political action film directed by Mani Ratnam. The film, which is loosely based on the life story of George Reddy, a scholar from Osmania University of Hyderabad, stars Suriya, R. Madhavan and Siddharth in the lead roles. Esha Deol, Meera Jasmine, Trisha, Sriman, Janagaraj and Bharathiraja appears in supporting roles. Notably, this film is the Tamil debut of Esha Deol and the only Tamil film she has ever acted in. The film stars Vijay in a titular character alongwith Simran, while Vivek, Nassar and Rajesh play supporting roles. The soundtrack for the film was composed by A. R. Rahman and the background score was by his associate Pravin Mani as Rahman was unavailable due to scheduling owing to his busy schedule. The editing was by Raja Mohammad, and the cinematography was by cinematographer Priyan.

Ponniyin Selvan: I is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language epic action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, it is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan. The film stars an ensemble cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, R. Ponniyin Selvan: I dramatises the early life of Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman, who would become the renowned emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). In the film, Vandiyathevan sets out to cross the Chola land to deliver a message from the crown prince Aditha Karikalan. Meanwhile, Kundavai attempts to establish political peace as vassals and petty chieftains plot against the throne.
