B. B. Ashok Kumar [1] (also known as Tiger Ashok Kumar) is a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, credited with arresting several notorious criminals and being involved in numerous police encounters while trying to capture hardened criminals. [2]
Born in Parane village, Virajpet, in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, he is the son of a coffee estate manager from Koppa-Chikkamagalur.
Kumar joined the Karnataka State Police Service in 1977 and is credited with 18 encounters. He was part of the Special Task Force of the Karnataka Police, which was tasked with capturing forest brigand Veerappan. During this time, Ashok is reported to have killed 13 of Veerappan's accomplices. [2] He and his team also gained attention for the Kammanahalli encounter, where notorious history-sheeter Station Shekar was killed. [3] Kumar retired from service on 31 July 2012 [2] and continues to face constant threats to his life from the criminal underworld. [4]
He won the President of India's Gold Medal three times and the Chief Minister of Karnataka's gold medal once. Ashok was given the nickname 'Tiger' by the Home Minister in 1984.[ citation needed ]

Chamarajanagar or Chamarajanagara is the southernmost district in the state of Karnataka, India. It was carved out of the original larger Mysore District in 1998. Chamarajanagar town is the headquarters of this district.
Koose Munusamy Veerappan was an Indian poacher, smuggler, domestic terrorist and bandit who was active for 36 years, and kidnapped major politicians for ransom. He was charged with sandalwood smuggling and poaching of elephants in the scrub lands and forests in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. He was wanted for killing approximately 184 people, about half of whom were police officers and forest officials. He was also responsible for poaching approximately 500 of the 2000 elephants killed in the peninsular region where he was active and for smuggling ivory worth US$2.6 million and about 65 tons of sandalwood worth approximately US$22 million.
Muthulakshmi was the wife of bandit Veerappan, who was killed by Special Task Force police in 2004. She lived in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. She was born in Neruppore village, Dharmapuri District to a farming family.

K Vijay Kumar, IPS, is a retired IPS officer. He was the chief of the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu that was involved in the death of the Veerappan during Operation Cocoon of 2004. He had also been the senior advisor to Home Ministry for the Left Wing Extremism areas. He served as the Advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir with Home, Forest, Ecology & Environment, Health & Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Hospitality & Protocol, Civil Aviation, Estates and Information portfolios. Currently he has joined back as senior security adviser in Ministry of Home Affairs in December 2018.
Mysore Puttaswamaiah Jayaraj, known as M. P. Jayaraj (1944/1946–1989) was an Indian mafia gangster who operated in Bangalore during the 1970s and 1980s. Kannada film actor Dr. Rajkumar was abducted by Veerappan on July 30, 2000, during the course of an armed attack on a farmhouse belonging to the actor in Gajanur, India. Rajkumar was released by Veerappan on November 15, 2000, after spending 108 days in his custody. The abduction resulted in further deterioration of already strained relations between the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, creating a tense situation in the two states.

Attahasa (transl. Defiance) is a 2013 Indian Kannada-language biographical film directed by A. M. R. Ramesh, based on the notorious forest brigand Veerappan. Kishore plays the role of Veerappan in the film, whilst featuring Arjun Sarja and Suresh Oberoi. After much delay in the theatrical release the film was opened to screens on 14 February 2013 all across the southern states of India to positive reviews. The film was partially reshot in Tamil as Vana Yuddham. The film was dubbed into Telugu as Veerappan.
The Palar Blast was a landmine attack on 9 April 1993 in Karnataka, India. The attack, organized by the forest brigand Veerappan, killed 22 people, making it the deadliest explosive attack in Karnataka during the 20th century.
Operation Cocoon was an operation launched by the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu Police to capture the forest brigand Veerappan and his associates, who were dominant in Sathyamangalam Forest in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The operation was headed by K. Vijay Kumar, and N. K. Senthamarai Kannan.
Deadly-2 is a 2010 Indian Kannada-language biographical crime film directed and written by Ravi Srivatsa. The film is based on the real life incidents of an infamous underworld don, Soma and is a sequel to the same team's 2005 released film, Deadly Soma. The film stars Auditya reprising his role as the protagonist and Meghana as his lady love replacing Rakshita in the prequel. Suhasini Maniratnam, Devaraj and Ravi Kale play other pivotal roles.
Killing Veerappan is a 2016 Indian Kannada-language biographical crime film directed by Ram Gopal Varma, who co-wrote the film with K. Balaji. The film is based on the events leading to Operation Cocoon to capture or kill Indian bandit Veerappan. Featuring Shiva Rajkumar in the central role touted to be based on N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, the then Superintendent of police, with the Indian Special Task Force, and the spy who masterminded Operation Cocoon.
N. K. Senthamarai Kannan is a Police Commissioner, and former Inspector General of Police in the Indian Police Service. He is the first Tiruppur city police commissioner. He has also served as a Special Task Force spy who headed the intelligence wing in the Operation Cocoon, behind the encounter with the notorious bandit Veerappan under the leadership of K. Vijay Kumar. The 2016 film Killing Veerappan is based on the operation carried out by him. Kannan is a 1997-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, who entered the State police service as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1989, and was later conferred IPS in 2003 with six years’ retrospective effect. He studied Economics in The American College, Madurai and later became Asst Professor in Economics in the same college from 1985, worked there till he entered Tamil Nadu State Police service in 1989.
Veerappan is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical action crime film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film is based on the real-life Indian bandit Veerappan and the events leading to Operation Cocoon, a mission to capture and kill him. The film is a remake of the Kannada film Killing Veerappan (2016) starring Shiva Rajkumar. The film stars Sandeep Bharadwaj, Sachiin J Joshi, Lisa Ray and Usha Jadhav.
D.V. Guruprasad, born in Bangalore in 1951 took his Bachelor of Science Degree from National College, Bangalore and later did his master's in English literature from Karnatak University, Dharwad. He joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1976 and was allotted Karnataka cadre. He served as Superintendent of Police of Bidar, Gulbarga and Kodagu districts, DIG of Gulbarga Range, and Commissioner of Police, Hubli-Dharwad. He headed the State Intelligence Department and the State Information Department. He headed the recruitment wing in the State Police and was responsible for initiating a very transparent recruitment process which brought him many laurels. He also had his stint in CISF, New Delhi. He served for five years in the Karnataka Road Transport Corporation and was instrumental in dividing the huge entity into four independent entities. He has had a small stint of police training in the U.K. He worked as Director General of Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department and retired as DGP Home Guards, Fire Force and Civil Defense in 2011. He has written many books on Indian police system and related topics, travelogues in English and Kannada languages. He is also columnist of Deccan Herald, English daily newspaper.
