BGI Ethiopia PLC is an Ethiopian brewery and beverage making company owned by the French brewing company Castel Group divisions Brasseries International Holdings (BIH) and HEBU Properties Ltd. Established in 1998, both groups started initial capital investment of 10 million dollars with major plants in Kombolcha, Addis Ababa, Zeway, Hawassa and Raya. BGI Ethiopia owns six breweries including the most iconic Saint George Beer and serves 53 countries worldwide.

BGI Ethiopia was founded in 1998 by wing of Castel Group, Brasseries International Holdings (BIH) and HEBU Properties Ltd with 10 million dollars initial capital. [1] Starting operation in Kombolcha, Addis Ababa, Zeway, Hawassa and Raya, BGI Ethiopia owns six breweries including the Saint George Beer and additionally served 53 countries internationally. The company annually produces 3.6 million hectoliters of bottled and draft beer. Privatization agreement was signed in September 1998 and BIH bought a total stake of 22,394 shares (73%) in BGI Ethiopia PLC in February 1999 with approved total share transfer. [2]
In 2009, the company showed interest to a start wine production. [3] It owns and operates Castle Winery where its vineyard is located in Ziway town. The winery produces 1.4 million hectoliters of different wines under brand names Acacia and Rift Valley. Distributed by domestic partner agents, BGI products are exported internationally to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Africa and Asia. [4]
Hora-Dambal, also known as Lake Zway or Dambal, is one of the freshwater Rift Valley lakes of Ethiopia. It is the home of the Zay people. Located about 100 miles south of Addis Ababa, on the border between the Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, the woredas holding the lake's shoreline are Adami Tullu Jido Kombolcha, Dugda, and Batu town. The town of Batu lies on the lake's western shore. The lake is fed primarily by two rivers, the Meki from the west and the Katar from the east, and is drained by the Bulbula which empties into Lake Abijatta. The lake's catchment has an area of 7,025 square kilometers.
Beer in Africa, especially lager, is produced commercially in most African countries, and indigenous people also make varieties of beer. Lake Hawassa or Awasa, is an endorheic basin in Sidama Region of Ethiopia, located in the Main Ethiopian Rift south of Addis Ababa, the capital city of the country. According to the Statistical Abstract of Ethiopia for 1967/68, the lake is 16 km long and 9 km wide, with a surface area of 129 square kilometers. It has a maximum depth of 10 meters and is located at an elevation of 1,708 meters. It is located inside the Awasa Caldera.
Hawassa known historically as Adare is a city in Ethiopia, on the shores of Lake Hawassa in the Great Rift Valley. It is 273 km (170 mi) south of Addis Ababa via Bishoftu, 130 km (81 mi) east of Sodo, and 75 km (47 mi) north of Dilla. The town serves as the capital of the Sidama Region. It lies on the Trans-African Highway 4 Cairo-Cape Town and has a latitude and longitude of 7°3′N38°28′E and an elevation of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) above sea level.
