Badminton was one of the two demonstration sports at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. [1] The events were held for three days, from 29 to 31 May 1958. There was only one event held and that was the men's team event. [2]

Contents

Originally four countries took part in the event. These four countries were the Republic of China, Thailand, the Philippines and hosts Japan. The Philippines later withdrew their team from the event. [3] The host nation, Japan won first place in the men's team event. [4] Thailand finished as runners-up while the Republic of China finished in third place. [5] [6]

Thailand sent their backup players to participate in the event due to the main squad's preparation for the 1958 Thomas Cup. [7]

The 1958 Asian Games, officially the Third Asian Games and commonly known as Tokyo 1958, was a multi-sport event held in Tokyo, Japan, from 24 May to 1 June 1958. It was governed by the Asian Games Federation. A total of 1,820 athletes representing 20 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games. The program featured competitions in 13 different sports encompassing 97 events, including four non-Olympic sports, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Four of these competition sports – field hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball – were introduced for the first time in the Asian Games.

Rudy Gunawan is a former Indonesian badminton player who played between 1980s and 1990s. He is arguably one of the best doubles players ever to play for Indonesia. Rudy Gunawan won various international championships, both in the men's doubles and mixed doubles events. He has paired up with players such as Eddy Hartono, Rosiana Tendean, Bambang Suprianto, and Ricky Subagja. He was on the Thomas Cup team of Indonesia five times but only won gold in 1994 and 1996. In addition, he helped strengthen the Indonesian team in the race for 1989, Sudirman Cup.

Badminton was one of the few main sports to be inaugurated at the 1959 SEAP Games. The events were held in Bangkok, Thailand from 12 to 17 December 1959. Due to the team events being cancelled, only two competitions were held, which were men singles and in men doubles. Only Thailand, Burma and Laos took part in the events.

The 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships was the third edition of Badminton Asia Team Championships, staged at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, Philippines, from 11 to 16 February 2020. This championships was organized by the Badminton Asia with Philippine Badminton Association as host organiser and sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation. This tournament served as the Asian qualifiers for the 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup in Denmark. Competitors could also accumulate points as part of qualification process for 2020 Summer Olympics badminton tournament in Tokyo. Indonesia and Japan were the defending champions on men's and women's category respectively. They both successfully defended their title.

Huang Zhanzhong is a Chinese badminton player. He won the men's doubles title at the 1995 Asian Cup, and was part of Chinese team that won the 1990 Asian Games and 1995 Sudirman Cup. Huang competed in the men's doubles tournament at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

The badminton men's team tournament at the 1962 Asian Games took place from 25 to 27 August at the Istora Senayan Indoor Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. Originally, there were eight teams competing in the event, the teams being Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Republic of China (Taiwan), Thailand, the Philippines, Malaya and Cambodia.

The men's team tournament at the 1965 Asian Badminton Championships, also known as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Cup took place from 30 October to 5 November 1965 at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 8 countries took part in the event. Burma and Pakistan withdrew from the event.

The men's team tournament at the 1971 Asian Badminton Championships, also known as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Cup took place from 13 to 16 August 1971 at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia. A total of 14 teams competed in this event. Taiwan and the Khmer Republic withdrew from the event.

The qualifying process for the 1964 Thomas Cup took place from 6 September 1963 to 22 March 1964 to decide the final teams which will play in the final tournament.

The knockout stage for the 1964 Thomas Cup began on 14 May 1964 with the first-round knockout and ended on 22 May with the final tie.

The qualifying process for the 1970 Thomas Cup took place from 29 July 1969 to 5 April 1970 to decide the final teams which will play in the final tournament.
