Bakery Square is an open-air shopping and office development in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Larimer, adjacent to the neighborhoods of Shadyside and East Liberty in the city's East End. Bakery Square is located on 5.1 acres along Penn Avenue. [1]
The main Bakery Square building was built as a Nabisco factory in 1918 and operated until 1998. [2] Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwest Pennsylvania bought the building in 1999 and leased it to the Atlantic Baking Company, [3] [4] which was subsequently merged with Bake-Line Group and then went bankrupt in 2004. [5] In 2006, the City of Pittsburgh declared the building blighted, paving the way for a redevelopment plan by Walnut Capital in 2007. [6] The building opened after remodeling in May 2010. [7] [8]
In June 2014, President Barack Obama visited TechShop, a workshop and prototyping studio, in Bakery Square. [9]
Bakery Square has 216,080 square feet of office space. More than half the space is leased by Google. Other tenants include: [10]
Google operates an office in Bakery Square. [13] [14] A piece of the Nabisco factory's original equipment, a large dough mixer, was left standing in homage to the site's industrial roots. [15] As of January 2011, Google was leasing approximately 115,000 square feet (10,700 m2) of office space in the complex, though not all of it was yet developed and filled with employees. [16]
Bakery square has 136,460 square feet of retail space. [2] Tenants include SpringHill Suites by Marriott, TechShop, Anthropologie, Free People, Panera, Starbucks, Jimmy Johns, Ragged Row, and L.A. Fitness. [17]
Walnut Capital successfully worked with Urban Redevelopment Authority of the City of Pittsburgh to purchase and subsequently demolish the former Reizenstein school. Construction began on a project named "Bakery Square 2.0," this new development will create a combination of new office space and residential development.
With completion in early June 2014, the first of the two apartment buildings at the site opened to tenants. The project, designed by Strada Architecture LLC., is LEED Certified, with bio-retention on site, green roofs, porous paving, and bioswales. A second building was completed and opened for rent in June 2016. [18] [19]

Standing 841 ft (256 m) tall, it is the tallest building in Pittsburgh, the fifth-tallest in Pennsylvania, the 69th-tallest in the United States, and the 200th-tallest in the world. It held its opening dedication on September 30, 1971.
1 New York Plaza is an office building in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City, at the intersection of South and Whitehall Streets near South Ferry. The building, measuring 640 feet (200 m) tall with 50 floors, is the southernmost skyscraper in Lower Manhattan. Chelsea Market is a food hall, shopping mall, office building and television production facility located in the Chelsea neighborhood of the borough of Manhattan, in New York City. The Chelsea Market complex occupies an entire city block with a connecting bridge over Tenth Avenue to the adjacent 85 Tenth Avenue building. The High Line passes through the 10th Avenue side of the building.
Liberty Place is a skyscraper complex in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The complex is composed of a 61-story, 945-foot (288 m) skyscraper called One Liberty Place, a 58-story, 848-foot (258 m) skyscraper called Two Liberty Place, a two-story shopping mall called the Shops at Liberty Place, and the 14-story Westin Philadelphia Hotel. Prior to the construction of Liberty Place, there was a gentlemen's agreement not to build any structure in Center City higher than the statue of William Penn on top of Philadelphia City Hall. The tradition lasted until 1984 when developer Willard G. Rouse III of Rouse & Associates announced plans to build an office building complex that included two towers taller than City Hall. There was a great amount of opposition to the construction of the towers with critics believing breaking the height limit would lead to construction of many more tall skyscrapers, ruining the livability and charm of Center City. Despite the opposition, construction of One Liberty Place was approved and the first phase of the project began in 1985 and was completed in 1987. One Liberty Place became the city's first skyscraper.
77 West Wacker Drive, previously the United Building, is an American office building in the Loop, Chicago. Finished in 1992, the building rises to a height of 668 ft with around 944,000 square feet (87,700 m2) of interior space. The building, with 50 floors, was designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. It was formerly known as the RR Donnelley Building when RR Donnelley was the primary tenant. RR Donnelley moved its corporate headquarters to a different location in May 2005, and in 2007 the building became the corporate headquarters of United Airlines. The deal included naming rights to the building.
525 William Penn Place is a skyscraper located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was completed in 1951 for the Mellon National Bank and the U.S. Steel Corporation. At 520 feet (160 m) tall, it was the second-tallest building in Pittsburgh until 1970, and the third-tallest until 1984. The building has 41 floors and approximately 950,000 square feet (88,000 m2) of office space. Presently it is the third-largest office building by square feet in downtown Pittsburgh. In 2016, BNY Mellon sold the building for $67.65 million.

Comprising 53 buildings situated on over 85 acres (0.34 km2), U-PARC is located 14 miles (23 km) from Downtown Pittsburgh in Harmar Township, Pennsylvania adjacent to the Route 28 expressway and Interstate 76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Chamchuri Square is a high-rise building complex located in Bangkok, Thailand. It consists of a commercial office tower, a residential tower and a podium housing a shopping mall which connects the two. Owned by Chulalongkorn University, construction on the complex began in 1994 but was halted from 1996 to 2005 and later completed in 2008. With forty floors and a height of 173 metres (568 ft), the office tower is the thirty-eighth-tallest building in Thailand as of 2009.
Chatham Center is a 5.5 acre commercial and residential building complex located within Downtown Pittsburgh. It is bounded by the Interstate 579 on the west, Centre Avenue on the north, Washington Place on the east, and Fifth Avenue to the south. Comprising a 2,200 car parking garage, Marriott Hotel, residential condominium building, and office and retail space, Chatham Center is a located adjacent to PPG Paints Arena and Duquesne University nearby.
Eleven Times Square is an office and retail tower located at 640 Eighth Avenue, at the intersection with West 42nd Street, in the Times Square and West Midtown neighborhoods of Manhattan, New York City. The 40-story, 1,100,000-square-foot (102,193 m2) tower rises 601 feet (183 m), making it the 131st tallest building in New York City. The structure is directly east of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and immediately north of The New York Times Building.
Parkway Center Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Opened in 1982, the mall closed in 2013 after losing Kmart, its last anchor store. The only remaining store in operation is a Giant Eagle supermarket. In 2016, the entirety of the mall was demolished, except for the Giant Eagle building with the vacant former Kmart space above it.
Northern Lights Shopping Center is a strip mall located in Economy, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. It was a major power center-style strip mall from its opening until the early 2000's. A Walmart opened on the adjacent lot to Northern Lights in 2014. Parts of the plaza were demolished in 2018.
The Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania--known colloquially as the RIDC--is a privately funded non-profit serving the Pittsburgh metropolitan area to focus on a regional approach to economic development primarily through managing and rehabilitating area research and business parks for modern tenants. The RIDC was formed on August 8, 1955 as a non-profit corporation after area business, corporate, government and labor leaders supported a central agency responsible for developing and coordinating efforts to create new employment and economic diversity. As of March 2013 it is listed as the third largest commercial property manager in metropolitan Pittsburgh with 7,400,000 gross leasable square feet, behind only Oxford Development and CBRE Group while surpassing Jones Lang LaSalle.
55 Hudson Yards is a skyscraper in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, New York City, just outside the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project. It and 50 Hudson Yards will add a combined 4 million square feet (370,000 m2) of space to the Hudson Yards project, even though the two buildings are located outside the redevelopment site itself.
