It was opened in 1970 and serves as a major air hub for the province of Gansu and western China. There are eight gates served by aerobridges in the terminal. A new larger Terminal 2 is located to the South, adjacent to the existing terminal. The new terminal adds nine aerobridges.

The Baoji–Lanzhou high-speed railway is a high-speed railway operated by China Railway High-speed between Baoji in western Shaanxi province and Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province. The railway cut the rail travel between Baoji and Lanzhou from five hours to one hour and a half. It connects with the Xi'an–Baoji high-speed railway to the east and the Lanzhou–Urumqi high-speed railway to the west. The feasibility study report has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. The construction work was expected to start in the first half of 2011, but it actually started in October 2012. The line started operations on July 9, 2017.
Lanzhou New Area is a state-level new area established in 2012 and is under the direct control of the municipal government of Lanzhou, Gansu province. It is located in the valley around Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, 30 kilometres from the old city of Lanzhou. It is the first state-level new development area in northwestern China, and the fifth state-level new area in the country.

The Eurasia Continental Bridge corridor is a high-speed rail corridor connecting Lianyungang, a port in northern Jiangsu province, to Ürümqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang. The corridor passes through the cities of Xuzhou (Jiangsu), Zhengzhou (Henan), Xi'an (Shaanxi), Lanzhou (Gansu), and Xining (Qinghai) en route. Announced in 2016 as part of the "eight verticals and eight horizontals" railway network plan, the rail corridor is an extension of the existing Xuzhou–Lanzhou high-speed railway.

Owing to its location near Lanzhou, it has been developed into a logistics base. China National Highway 109 forms the transport artery of the town.
Shidong is a town of Gaolan County, Lanzhou, China. It is also the county seat of Gaolan. The town is named after the local Shidong temple, built in the Yuan dynasty. Shidong district was established in 1949. In 1957, Shidong district became Shidong township. In 2004, Shidong merged with Chengguan town and became Shidong town. The town has a population of 51,700 residents.
