Baneswar Saikia (born 8 October 1931,Nagaon) is an Indian communist politician. He belongs to Revolutionary Communist Party of India. [4] He joined the party in 1947,when he was in the eighth standard. Baneswar Saikia is the son of Late Tularam Saikia and Late Sadari Saikia. He is a former lawyer,a former MLA, [5] a retired professor of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College of Nagaon,the first Head and the founder of the Department of Economics [6] of the same college,a politician,a Marxist economist,a writer and a social worker. He is also a former State Secretary of Assam State Committee and a former General Secretary of RCPI. [7] [8] Baneswar Saikia is able to read,speak and write in Assamese,English and Bengali.
He retired from ADP College in 1991. In May 2016,ADP College Retired TeachersForum was formed. Professor Baneswar Saikia was elected as the adviser of the association. [9]
Professor Saikia was a student activist and presently is one of the Central Committee members of the RCPI. During his school days,Saikia was influenced by Marxism. He started his political career as a students' political activist,as a member of the Assam Provincial Students' Federation (APSF). He was also involved in the RCPI-led uprisings in Assam that took place between 1948 and 1952.

The Revolutionary Communist Party of India is a political party in India. The party was founded as the Communist League by Saumyendranath Tagore in 1934,breaking away from the Communist Party of India (CPI). RCPI led armed uprisings after the independence of India,but later shifted to parliamentary politics. The party is active in Assam,Kerala,West Bengal,Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The party was represented in the West Bengal while being a part of Second United Front Cabinet (1969) as well as in various state government during the Left Front rule in the state (1977–2011). In Assam,the party won four Legislative Assembly seats in 1978,but its political influence has since declined in the state.
Buranjis are a class of historical chronicles and manuscripts associated with the Ahom kingdom. There were written initially in the Ahom Language and later in the Assamese language as well. The Buranjis are an example of historical literature which is rare in India—they bear resemblance to Southeast Asian traditions of historical literature instead. The Buranjis are generally found in manuscript form,a number of these manuscripts have been compiled and published especially in the Assamese language.
Nagaon is a city and a municipal board in Nagaon district in the Indian state of Assam. It is situated 122.6 kilometres (76 mi) east of Guwahati.
Assamese literature is the entire corpus of poetry,novels,short stories,plays,documents and other writings in the Assamese language. It also includes the literary works in the older forms of the language during its evolution to the contemporary form and its cultural heritage and tradition. The literary heritage of the Assamese language can be traced back to the c. 9–10th century in the Charyapada,where the earliest elements of the language can be discerned.
Bhabendra Nath Saikia was a novelist,short-story writer,editor and film director from Assam,India. Dr. Saikia received his doctorate in physics from the University of London. He began his career as a reader in the Department of Physics,University of Guwahati. He later played an important role in the publication of college level textbooks in the Assamese language during his tenure as the Secretary of the Co-ordination Committee for production of textbooks in regional languages.
Bishnu Prasad Rabha (1909–1969) was an Indian cultural figure from Assam,known for his contributions in the fields of music,dance,painting,literature as well as political activism. As an advocate of people's cultural movement,he drew heavily from different genres of classical and folk cultural traditions. Considered a doyen of the Culture of Assam,the Assamese people affectionately call him Kalaguru. He is also called by Marxists as Sainik Silpi for his active participation in the armed struggle,led by the Revolutionary Communist Party of India (RCPI).
Orunodoi or Arunodoi was the first Assamese-language magazine published monthly from Sibsagar,Assam,in 1846. The magazine created a new era in the world of Assamese literature and gave birth to notable authors such as Anandaram Dhekial Phukan,Hemchandra Barua,Gunabhiram Barua,and Nidhi Levi Farwell. The magazine took the initiative of innovating the then Assamese dialect instead of borrowing words from other languages. The Assamese people got to know about the western world only through this magazine,which opened the gate to the modern literacy in Assam. It mainly included various news related to current affairs,Science,astrology,history and also trivia although Christianity was its main aim. The magazine's publishing ended when the printing press was sold in 1883.
Akhil Gogoi is an Indian peasant leader,RTI activist,and Member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Sibsagar since 2021. He is also the founder and president of Raijor Dal since 2020. Over the years he has been leading many anti-graft movements in the state. Gogoi came to national attention after he was awarded the Shanmugam Manjunath Integrity Award in 2008 for his relentless fight against corruption. In 2010,he was awarded the national Right to Information Award by Public Cause Research Foundation for his role in exposing a Rs. 12.5 million scam in Sampoorna Gram Rozgar Yojna in the Golaghat district of Assam. Gogoi is the founder Secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS)- a left wing peasant organisation based in Assam.
Mahim Bora was an Indian writer and educationist from Assam. He was elected as a president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha held in 1989 at Doomdooma. He was awarded most notably the Padma Shri in 2011,the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2001 and the Assam Valley Literary Award in 1998. Assam Sahitya Sabha conferred its highest honorary title Sahityacharyya on him in 2007.He also participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 held in Kaliabor town in the Nagaon district of Assam.
Anandaram Dhekial Phukan (1829–1859) was one of the pioneers of Assamese literature in the Orunodoi era who joined in the literary revolution initiated by missionaries. He was remembered for his efforts in promoting the Assamese language. He played a major role in reinstating the Assamese language as the official language of Assam.
Phukan or Phookan or Phukon is a surname of assamese origin and a Paik officer. Now the descendants' clans use it as a surname. This is usually used among the people of Assamese origin and others.
Saikia was a Paik officer of the Ahom militia who led a hundred paiks. The Koch kingdom had a similar system in place. As it was a purely administrative position,the title holder could belong to diverse ethnic groups or religions. Today,this title is used as a surname by Assamese people of various ethnic origins. The post of Saikia in the Paik system was higher in rank to the Bora but lower in rank to the Hazarika.
Rai Bahadur Surya Kumar Bhuyan MBE (1892–1964) was a writer,historian,educator,social activist,storyteller,essayist,professor and a poet from Assam. He has written many books on ancient history,stories,essays,biographies,etc. in the world of Assamese literature. He presided over the Asam Sahitya Sabha (1953) held at Shillong. He was the elected member of Rajya Sabha during 1952–53,and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1956.
Nagen Saikia is an Indian writer. He was formerly a professor of Dibrugarh University. Saikia had also been a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986-1992 and was the vice-chairman of the Upper House from 1990-1992. Saikia started his career as a teacher and went on to serve in different reputed institutions in various categories. He also delivered lectures on various topics about Assamese literature,including in the US and England. He has published numerous literary essays,short stories,novels,books and articles,to his credit. Saikia was conferred with the Sahitya Akademi award in 1997 for his short stories collection Andharat Nizar Mukh and was honoured by the Mohan Chandra Sahitya Sabha in 1980 for Chinta aru Charcha. He was conferred the Fellow of Sahitya Akademi,the highest honour conferred by the prestigious Literary body of the Nation,the Sahitya Akademi on the most distinguished Indian writers.
Cotton University is a public state university located in Guwahati,Assam,India. It was established in 2017 by the provisions of an Act from the Assam Legislative Assembly which merged Cotton College State University and Cotton College. The University has progressed to become one of the top 200 institutions of the country.
Kuladhar Saikia,is an ex officer of Indian Police Service who had retired in 2019 as Director General of Police at Guwahati has been involved in issues relating to Community Development and Community Policing. He was awarded President's police medals twice for his outstanding contribution to policing. He was the initiator and Nodal officer of Assam Police community empowerment initiative called “Project Prahari”. and one of the founders of Economic Policy Research group called Assam Prakalpa. He was awarded the prestigious Katha Award in 2000 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015 for his short stories. He was elected President of Asam Sahitya Sabha in January 2020.
