Joseph ("Josy") Barthel was a Luxembourgish athlete. He was the surprise winner of the Men's 1500 metres at the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the only athlete representing Luxembourg to have won a gold medal at the Olympics. Besides athletics, Barthel also led successful careers in both chemistry and politics.

Barbara Pearl Jones is a retired American sprinter. She was part of the 4 × 100 m relay teams that won gold medals at the 1952 and 1960 Olympics and at the 1955 and 1959 Pan American Games. At the 1952 Olympics she became the youngest woman to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics, aged 15 years 123 days. She later became a member of the U.S. Paralympic Games Committee.

Barbara Ann Scott was a Canadian figure skater. She was the 1948 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion (1947–1948), and a four-time Canadian national champion in ladies' singles. Known as "Canada's Sweetheart,” she is the only Canadian to have won the Olympic ladies' singles gold medal, the first North American to have won three major titles in one year and the only Canadian to have won the European Championship (1947–48). During her forties she was rated among the top equestrians in North America. She received many honours and accolades, including being made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1991 and a member of the Order of Ontario in 2008.

The men's 1500 metres event at the 1952 Olympics took place between July 24 and July 26. Fifty-two athletes from 26 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Josy Barthel of Luxemburg; to date, this is the only Olympic gold medal won by a Luxembourger, though Luxembourg-born Michel Théato is credited for winning the 1900 Marathon for France. Germany won its first medal in the 1500 metres with Werner Lueg's bronze.

Zhenqi Barthel is a German table tennis player of Chinese origin. In 2002, she moved to Essen, Germany, where she became a resident athlete of TuS Holsterhausen, and trained for the table tennis team, under her personal coaches Jörg Bitzigeio and Wang Zhi. Three years later, she was adopted by the couple Barthel, changed her surname, and obtained a German citizenship. As of March 2013, Barthel is ranked no. 66 in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). She is also right-handed, and uses the shakehand grip.

Barbara Matić is a Croatian judoka. She is a two-time world champion in the women's 70 kg event. She is also a two-time junior champion in the women's 70 kg division, Matić won a bronze medal at the 2014 European Judo Championships. Her younger sister Brigita Matić has also been a successful judoka on junior level.
Timo Barthel is a German diver. He specialises in 1-meter, 3-meter and synchronised events. He won the 2015 and 2017 German diving championships and was part of the extended selection for the 2016 Summer Olympics, however he could not secure a place in the final line up. His partner at synchronised event at the 2017 German championships was Florian Fandler.
