Barbara L. Toles (born July 31,1956) is an American community organizer and Democratic politician from Milwaukee,Wisconsin. She served eight years in the Wisconsin State Assembly,representing Wisconsin's 17th Assembly district from 2004 to 2012.
Barbara Toles was born in Milwaukee,Wisconsin,in July 1956. She graduated from Milwaukee's West Division High School in 1973,and went on to earn her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison,in 1979. After graduating she went to work as a teacher in Milwaukee and became a member of the American Federation of Teachers union Local 212. [1] While working as a teacher,she continued her own education at Marquette University,and earned her M.Ed. degree in 1997.
In 2003,state representative Spencer Coggs won a recall election to replace scandal-plagued state senator Gary George. Coggs thus had to vacate his Assembly seat,necessitating a new special election in the 17th Assembly district. Toles ran as a Democrat for the vacant seat in the January 2004 special election. Her only opponent was independent Wendell Harris,and she prevailed with 79% of the vote. [2] She was sworn in February 3,2004.
Toles won re-election four times in the district. In April 2012,Toles announced she would not run for re-election. She later resigned her seat early,effective July 2,2012. [3]
Since leaving office,Toles has remained active with the teacher's union and the community. Most recently,she has been vocal in initiatives to increase road safety and decrease traffic deaths in Milwaukee. [4]
Robert W. Wirch is an American Democratic politician from Kenosha County,Wisconsin. He is a member of the Wisconsin Senate,representing Wisconsin's 22nd Senate district since 1997. He previously served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly,from 1993 to 1997,and served on the Kenosha County Board of Supervisors before that.

Neal J. Kedzie is an American lobbyist and Republican politician from Walworth County,Wisconsin. He served 11 years in the Wisconsin Senate,representing the 11th Senate district from 2003 until his sudden retirement in June 2014. He previously served six years in the Wisconsin State Assembly,and was chairman of the board of supervisors of the town of La Grange for ten years. Since leaving office,he has worked as a lobbyist for the Wisconsin trucking industry as president of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association.

After leaving government,he became associate director of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee's Institute for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation.
David A. Cullen is an American lawyer and Democratic politician from Milwaukee,Wisconsin. He is the current treasurer of Milwaukee County. Prior to his election as treasurer in 2014,he served 13 years as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly (1990–2013),two years on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors (2012–2014),and 7 years on the Milwaukee Public Schools Board of Education (1983–1990).

The district also contains Lake Kegonsa State Park. The seat is represented by Democrat Jimmy P. Anderson since January 2017. Prior to the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturning the 2020 district boundaries,District 47 was often used as one of the more extreme examples of Gerrymandering in the Wisconsin Legislature with the boundaries being compared to "swiss cheese".
